"... The Sultan was persuaded (by Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak) to reject the Pakatan Rakyat request to dissolve the State Assembly.

Najib’s "persuasion’" was simple. Nazrin, his son, should NOT be the Raja Muda of Perak. And this means he should also not be the next Sultan.

So, Nazrin’s succession to the Perak throne depends on the goodwill of the FEDERAL government.

If Pakatan Rakyat remains the state government, then expect Nazrin to pay the price when his time comes to succeed his father.

Furthermore, the Sultan and his family has asked for a lot of things from the Pakatan Rakyat state government, all of which they rejected.

Umno will ensure that the Sultan and his family get whatever they want if Barisan Nasional takes over as the Perak state government.

And with that Pakatan Rakyat’s fate was sealed. The Sultan swore in Barisan Nasional as the new Perak state government and Pakatan Rakyat was sent into the opposition aisle.

In just a few months the (Perak) Sultan and his family has suddenly become one of the richest royal families in Malaysia, of course, at the expense of Pakatan Rakyat.

Perakians, in particular the Malays, think that the opposition is not showing the Sultan of Perak the respect he deserves.

What they do not know is the (Perak) Sultan does NOT deserve any respect.

And many are also not aware why the Sultan wanted Pakatan Rakyat kicked out of Perak."

Why the Pakatan Rakyat government was brought down in Perak

by

Raja Petra Kamarudin

We all know what happened in Perak. What many do not know is WHY it happened.

If you can remember, it took one week for the Perak and Selangor state governments to get sworn in after the March 2008 general election. The Sultans of these two states wanted to first ‘discuss the matter’ with the Pakatan Rakyat State Assemblypersons. The Sultans then set certain terms and conditions before agreeing to swear in the new Pakatan Rakyat state governments.

This gap of one week allowed the old Barisan Nasional state governments time to remove and destroy quite a lot of very damaging evidence of the wrongdoings of the previous governments.

The one-week delay also allowed Barisan Nasional to negotiate the possibility of PAS teaming up with Umno to form the state governments in Perak and Selangor. Umno even agreed that PAS would become the Menteris Besar of these two states. And, to add icing to the cake, Umno even agreed to allow PAS to implement Islamic laws in these two states.

But PAS stayed loyal to their two other partners in Pakatan Rakyat, PKR and DAP, and they declined Umno’s offer. Finally, the two Sultans had no choice but to swear in the Pakatan Rakyat state governments in Perak and Selangor. But this did not stop them from plotting behind the scenes on how to bring down the governments.

The Sultan of Selangor was quite prepared to consider the whole matter a fait accompli. After all, Pakatan Rakyat in Selangor had a clear majority and it would be quite difficult to buy off so many State Assemblypersons.

But Perak was another matter altogether. Pakatan Rakyat’s majority in Perak was thinner than in Selangor.

As soon as the new state government had been put in place, the Sultan of Perak began asking for this, that and the other. The Pakatan Rakyat Perak state government would have been quite prepared to tolerate some of the demands of the Perak Palace for the sake of maintaining a good relationship with the Palace. But what the Sultan and his family wanted was just too excessive and the Pakatan Rakyat Perak state government had no choice but to say no to the Sultan’s demands.

And this, of course, upset the Sultan. So, when Pakatan Rakyat lost its majority in the Perak State Assembly, it did not take too much persuading for the Sultan to agree to swear in a new Barisan Nasional state government.

At first, the Sultan was not too sure whether he should kick out the Pakatan Rakyat state government in favour of a Barisan Nasional government. When the Pakatan Rakyat Menteri Besar, Nizar Jamaluddin, went before the Sultan to request that the State Assembly be dissolved to make way for fresh state elections, the Sultan said he would think about it first. But immediately after that the Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak, went to meet the Sultan and the Sultan was persuaded to reject the Pakatan Rakyat request to dissolve the State Assembly and instead he swore in Barisan Nasional as the new state government.

Najib’s ‘persuasion’ was simple. Nazrin, his son, should not be the Raja Muda of Perak. And this means he should also not be the next Sultan. And in the event that the Sultan dies, as surely he will one day, the federal government will not support Nazrin as the next Sultan of Perak. See what happened to Negeri Sembilan. Although the Yamtuan appointed his son as the regent, this does not mean he becomes the next Yamtuan.

(Note: Read here article on "Ascendancy to the Perak Throne)
Perak is the only state in Malaysia that the prince (son) will not automatically be installed as the successor upon the demise of the Sultan (father). Currently, there are six people who possess the right to be the next Sultan - the Raja Muda, the Raja DiHilir, the Raja Kechil Besar, The Raja Kechil Sulung, the Raja Kechil Tengah and the Raja Kechil Bongsu. Although it is not predetermined, the Raja Muda is usually made the new Sultan by the Dewan Negara Perak, which comprises dignitaries of the State.Read here for more
So, Nazrin’s succession to the Perak throne depends on the goodwill of the FEDERAL l government. But only if the state government is a Barisan Nasional government will there be this goodwill.

What was it that the Sultan and his family wanted which Pakatan Rakyat said no to and which Barisan Nasional has now said yes?

Yes, let us see how in just a few months the Sultan and his family has suddenly become one of the richest royal families in Malaysia, of course, at the expense of Pakatan Rakyat.
  1. Umno gave the Sultan a piece of state land known as lot 183578. The land is approximately 600 acres in size and is at Tanjong Tualang in the district of Kinta. This land has been parked under the name of the Sultan’s proxy, Mohamed Khaair Johari Hj Osman.

  2. Umno gave the Sultan a 1,000-acre timber concession along the 11km Gerik-Kupang highway in Ulu Kenderong, Gerik, Hulu Perak. This concession was originally given to Universiti Utara Malaysia. However, it was later revoked and given to Pusat Kreatif Kanak-Kanak whose Chairman is Raja Datuk Seri Ashman Shah Ibni Sultan Azlan Shah.

  3. Umno gave the Sultan seven timber concessions at compartments 39, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45 and 49 in the Kenderong Forest Reserve in Hulu Perak. The seven lots, which come to approximately 600 acres, were parked under two proxy companies of the Sultan -- Syarikat Zotonjaya Sdn Bhd and Kibaran Wang Sdn Bhd.

  4. Umno is about to approve a proposal for reforestation involving 10,781 hectares. 5,781 hectares is at the Gunung Besout Forest Reserve in Southern Perak while 5,000 hectares is at Pondok Tanjung in the Larut Matang district. The company that will get this huge project is Permatang Utama Sdn Bhd (company registration number 513583-D) whose Executive Chairman is Datuk Seri Ismail Farouk Abdullah, the Sultan’s son-in-law.

  5. Further to that, Datuk Seri Ismail Farouk Abdullah was allowed to take over the state-owned Casuarina Hotel in Ipoh for a negotiated cut throat price of only RM43 million whereas it can fetch a far higher price on the open market. The hotel is located in one of the most prime land in Ipoh and just the empty land alone is worth a huge amount of money.
It is not that the Perak Royal Family is destitute.

It is more like they are GREEDY.

Raja Datuk Seri Eleena Azlan Shah is a Director of GAMUDA BERHAD and is Malaysia's 25th richest person with assets worth over RM 773 million. This makes her the second richest woman in Malaysia after Puan Sri Chong Chook Yew, who occupies the number 18 slot with more than RM 1 billion in assets.

Gamuda Berhad has been awarded more than RM10 billion worth of contracts. It also operates and maintains 230 kilometres of highways plus is a major township and property developer with four township projects involving more than 30,000 houses.

(Note: Read here article, "Perak, PR, BN and Gamuda - It’s all about Business, Stupid"
An interesting fact about Gamuda - the LARGEST shareholder is also the second richest woman on the 2008 Forbes 40 Richest Malaysians at #35 spot. She is Raja Datuk Seri Eleena Raja Azlan Shah, the daughter of the Sultan of Perak, Raja Azlan Shah. She was worth RM773 Million ($228 Million) at #25 spot in 2007’s 40 Richest Malaysians but this figure dropped to RM510 Million ($150 Million) in 2008 at #35 spot. Based on today’s stock price of RM1.91 a share her fortune is only at RM287.46 million based on her remaining stake of 7.5% in Gamuda via Generasi Setia (M) Sdn Berhad.

Naturally when his father refused to dissolve the state assembly for a fresh election various rumors and speculations began its circulation. Malaysian politics is perhaps the dirtiest but you can’t blame the public to have a perception that the federal government was twisting the arms of the Sultan. Gamuda is basically at the mercy of the Federal government. With water taps closed by the federal government to three of the most developed states, Selangor, Perak and Penang, Gamuda is screaming for projects. Certainly the nation has the money. In fact the country is flushed with more money than before the Mar 2008 general election simply because the federal government does not know where to pump the money to since the most developed states such as Selangor, Perak (was) and Penang are controlled by opposition parties. So there you have it. Perakians, in particular the MALAYS, think that the opposition is not showing the Sultan of Perak the respect he deserves. What they (the MALAYS) do not know is the Sultan does NOT deserve any respect.

And many are also not aware WHY the Sultan wanted Pakatan Rakyat kicked out of Perak.

Now, we hope, THEY do.

Mengapa Pakatan Rakyat Perak dijatuhkan?

Taktik Najib amat mudah.

Keluarga Diraja Perak bukan orang susah. Tetapi nampaknya mereka tamak.

Asian Students in Australia: An Aussie Tribute

Just go home - you deserve it

    by

    Danny Katz

    October 15 2009

Read here article by Danny Katz in The Age

    Asian students go home!

Stop whatever you're doing right now and go home, back to the houses where you live, flop on your couches, put your feet up, and just TREAT YOURSELVES TO A DAY OFF, because you deserve it, you've earned it.

I'm not one to make gross stereotypical generalisations but Asian students work very, very hard, and it makes non-Asian students look like stereotypically generalised gross slackers.

Do not deny your impressive hardworkingness, O Asian students of Oz, for I have seen it firsthand.

Seen the Vietnamese kids at my son's high school studying all through lunchtime, sometimes nodding off from sheer exhaustion.

Seen the young student waiter at my round-the-corner Indian joint in full octo-mode, serving eight customers, cleaning five tables, taking three phone orders ALL AT THE SAME TIME, and still managing a gracious smile at the end of the meal when I tip him two bucks, my beloved glaring at me all the way home while I mumble ''C'mon, it's fair, 10 per cent, they probably don't even tip in India, stop looking at me like that, STOP IT!''.

And I've seen it this week at one of this city's most prestigious educational institutions - not Tony Bartuccio's dance studios, one rung lower … The University of Melbourne.

Now why was I visiting Melbourne Uni?

Not for the reason you're all thinking: not to get my honorary doctorate for contributions to Australian literary culture. I've already got one of those - I bought it online from the University of North West Northern Phoenix (non-accredited), along with some licensed pills that ''give you concrete thing in pants!''

No, I was at Melbourne Uni because it was my birthday, I turned 46, and I thought it'd be pleasant to take a day off and head into town and have a nice relaxing MIDLIFE-CRISIS MELTDOWN by myself.

So I wandered round the campus trying to revisit my long-lost glory days of youthful student life - a total of 20 days if you count actual ''learning time'', the rest spent sitting in the student union bar trying to crack onto science/dip-ed girls because I was too ugly to get an arts/law one.

But the moment I started looking around, I knew something fundamental had changed in the uni-universe.

Where were the loonbag student activists soapboxing on the library lawn about pro-democracy anti-nuclear Palestinian-Burmese bilby-juntas?

Where were the notice-me drama students poncing around the arts faculty and breaking into spontaneous show tunes between scoob-puffs?

Where were the drunken student antics outside the mechanical engineering building involving a jug of beer, an unzipped fly, and a dangling scrote?

None of that traditional stuff was going on anywhere.

Instead the lawns and laneways, courtyards and corridors were all peaceful and orderly and filled with students, most of them Asian, in a state of … STUDIOUSNESS. AT A UNI! IN AUSTRALIA!

It was a DISGRANCE: Students were reading textbooks in corners, writing essays in food courts, and some even appeared to be doing an unfamiliar scurrying movement that could only be described as ''AHHHHH, I MUST RUSH TO MY NEXT LECTURE BECAUSE I'M PAYING ANYWHERE BETWEEN $20,000 AND $60,000 A YEAR IN FEES. AHHHHHH!''

At last I spotted a big rowdy pack of scruffy boofheads lolling about on the grass, swearing, boozing, pashing, just like students used to do - then they all got up, brushed themselves off, finished their staff meeting, and toddled back to their jobs as tutors, lecturers, professors and deputy vice-chancellors.

Asian students of Australia, ignore the handful of racist thugs - they're just half-wits jealous of your focus and drive and computer-gaming skills and natural manga-cool.

Don't leave this country, stay here for good, but now and then take a day off, watch some telly, chill, go out for a cheap meal at your local non-Asian eatery - tip the waiter two bucks, see how it makes them feel.

PAS, Are You IN as a Team Player or Not? Otherwise, Get OUT !

Read here for more in ARTiculation Blog

    faux PAS @ bagan pinang

    by

    Art Harun

    Excerpts:

PAS made a PROMISE by joining the PR and its election manifesto. This is admitted even by YB Khalid Samad, a PAS stalwart himself.

However, there are people WITHIN that party who have deliberately gone AGAINST that very promise. The radical and "fundamentalistic" stance taken by PAS in recent times have served ammunition to the BN, particularly UMNO.

The non-Muslim voters are of course wary of PAS' pragmatist approach towards the country's socio-political landscape.

And not without substantial reasons too.The beer issue in Shah Alam. The Michael Learns To Rock issue after that. Then recently, the Beyonce concert issue.

Then we have Hassan Ali establishing a moral police force with the power to arrest in Shah Alam. He then even questioned the Selcat, which was a state legislative machinery established by the Pakatan Rakyat government itself! These are but instances where PAS had opened its mouth wide to show its fangs to the absolute horror of the non-Muslims - and Muslims alike - in this country.

Added to that, the not too discreet "khalwat" between PAS and UMNO under the pretext of a "unity government" is a bitter dish which has to be swallowed by thousands, if not millions, of voters who had voted for PAS in the belief and trust that PAS was a permanent part of a coalition which was going to oppose the BN and UMNO, not to work with them.

The result of all these self defeatist posturing by PAS is there for all of us to see.
    1. The non-Malays have shunned PAS in Bagan Pinang.

    2. The Malays themselves, have not really warmed up to PAS save for some hardcore PAS members in the area.

    3. The fence-seaters jumped to the BN side of the fence.
It was nothing short of a debacle.
    • So what is what in PAS? Which is which?

    • What does PAS stand for?

    • What is PAS fighting for? What?
Those are the questions which the PAS has to answer. Those are the questions which the PR has to answer too if it has serious ambition of ruling this country.

Added to that the PR must also deal with the theatrics of MPs like Zulkifli Noordin, who have proven time and time again, to be a trigger happy lone ranger on a rampage.

The people expect the PR to settle all these issues once and for all. Lest political boredom would set in and the people might get numbed and go into a deep political slumber of the 70s, 80s and 90s .

The PR could then kiss its ambition a long goodbye.

In Bagan Pinang, sources from within the PR told me that PAS was almost going it alone. From the start PAS had disagreed with the choice of the candidate.

The advice by the MP for Teluk Kemang, PKR's Datuk Kamarul Baharin Abbas that a local boy should be fielded was NOT followed by PAS.

During the campaign period, the focus of PAS machinery was to discredit Tan Sri Isa by, among others, reminding the people of what he did in UMNO and highlighting the projects which he had apparently abandoned when he was the Menteri Besar. That obviously did not work. Hence the seemingly chaotic and unfocussed campaigns run by PAS.

The only momentum gained by PAS was when Tok Guru Nik Aziz and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim came to town. PAS should really look at itself in the mirror why these two persons are really liked by the crowd. Is it any wonder why?

The spiritual leader of PAS is well liked by all and sundry, Muslims and non-Muslims because he makes sense all the time. So is the case with DSAI.

If PAS could stick to the PR's agenda, all the time, surely it would win the crowd ALL the time.
However, sadly, that is not the case.

It is obvious that an opposition coalition is a viable alternative to the BN.

The 2008 momentum must be maintained if ever the BN is going to be shaken off its pedestal and if the country wanted to see a 2 party system at work. However, the political blueprint of the coalition must be prepared and agreed upon by all the players.

It is time that the PR sit down together and solve the differences of ideologies within its organisation. A common stand on fundamental issues must be agreed upon. There must also be an irrevocable undertaking by the players to conform at all time with the blueprint as and when it is ready.

Any players, individual or in group, who deliberately go astray should be dealt with promptly, and severely.

Once and for all, PAS, DAP and PKR must be asked, "Are you with the PR or not?"

If so, you are in. If not, well, you are out.

Otherwise, Bagan Pinang could be the start of the demise of the Pakatan Rakyat.

    by

    "pokmas pmas"

Tiada idea sendiri.

Ingatlah 'ILMU ITU BUKAN SAHAJA PERLU DIPELAJARI TETAPI PERLU DIAMALKAN' maaf, kami hanya mengingatkan.......

    Quote:

Satu kejutan berlaku.

    3. Slogan “PAS for ALL” PAS Sudah Mula Dicurigai Pengundi BUKAN Melayu

    42% Rise in NON-Malay Support for UMNO/BN

Read here in Malaysiakini for more

    Excerpts:

UMNO/BN obtained a whopping 42 percent INCREASE in NON -Malays support in the Bagan Pinang by-election on Sunday , according to political analyst Ong Kian Ming's estimation of the Election Commission's data when he examined the change in the level of BN support from 2008 to 2009 by 'saluran' or polling stream and the ethnic composition of the respective 'saluran'.

Umno candidate Mohd Isa Samad had registered an increase of 4 percent in Malay support in the Negri Sembilan state seat compared to the results in the 2008 general election, despite being found guilty of vote buying in Umno polls.

About 67 percent Malay voters had backed Isa.

A higher proportion - 73 percent - of NON -Malay voters gave their support to the Umno candidate.

In the 2008 general election, BN got 3,080 postal votes against PAS' 1,189.

Nevertheless, he said Bagan Pinang is a wake-up call for Pakatan Rakyat.

"It is a stark reminder, especially to PAS, that they CANNOT take the NON -Malay vote for granted," Ong said.

10 Reasons You'll Never See in any Honest Analysis Why UMNO/BN Won a Landslide in Bagan Pinang

    Read here for more.
    10) The Chinese can relate to a corrupt candidate more than they can to an alien.

    9) PAS' only physical presence in Negeri Sembilan was its HQ located within a pondok.

    8) Some Pakatan leaders were uncomfortable campaigning for PAS when Hassan Ali appears to be the 'other' face of the party.

    7) PKR has vested interest PAS does not get a foot into the state.

    6) The Indians suddenly have an abundance of political vehicle choices and they hopped on the 1Malaysia bus.

    5) The Malays had a choice between Isa Samad and going fishing. PAS was never an alternative in the by-election.

    4) The NON-Malays will NOT blindly vote for Pas unless it stands moderate icons like Nizar or Khalid Samad.

    3) Bookies' generous odds swayed the decisions of punters and their families.

    2) The PAS candidate was tongue-tied and couldn't do the usual bullshit multilingual greeting before his speech.

    1) It was Allah's plan to knock some sense into the Mullah wannabes ahead of GE13.

PAS, you need to find your way back fast!

    by

    "Tohkong Mosjid"
(Penulis adalah seorang Pemuda bukan Muslim )

    Excerpts: Read here for more

5,435 majority win by Isa Samad !!

5,435 from 2,333, an increase of 133% in majority votes.

Yes, I hope PAS was humbled by that number, and this loss is worst than UMNO's loss in Permatang Pasir (4551 votes).

After spending over 50 years in Malaysia being attacked by UMNO/BN day-in-day-out as the extremist Islamic party; to being able to overcome that perception on March 2008; only to lose it all 19 months later in Bagan Pinang? You were supposed to be on your way to replace UMNO as the biggest party in Malaysia.

Have you asked yourself, what has gone so wrong?

Don't blame the voters. Don't try to blame it Tan Sri Isa's popularity either.

The fact that you lost with a bigger majority to a tainted candidate like him, regardless whether Bagan Pinang was his stronghold or not, there must be something VERY wrong about you.

Why did 75% voters in Bagan Pinang voted against you? Ok, perhaps you wanted to say they had 4600 postal votes in hand.

Fine, let's take out the 4600 votes then. Yet you still lost by 3413 votes to 2,578 votes. So, don't even try to pin it on postal votes as well.

But the question remains, why did 57% of ground voters in Bagan Pinang voted against you across all races?

How come voters in Bagan Pinang viewed PAS's candidate in such low quality, that he was not even given the chance to beat Rohaizat's (the disbarred lawyer) score?

    So, what went wrong?

Was it due to a campaign strategy gone wrong? Or was it due to the dented image of PAS caused by controversial statements from its own leaders?

Attacking Isa Samad's past record as a MB was a very unintelligent move.

For 22 years he was the MB, there must be so much that he had done right, compared to his wrongs, right?

If his money politics scandal did not deter people from nominating him, what makes you think people will hate him for his past failed projects? Even for a very successful corporate leader, there must be some broken projects under his belt along the way.

You cannot underestimate the number of voters in Bagan Pinang that Isa Samad had helped directly and indirectly during his tenure as MB. Your actions of exposing Isa's failed projects as a MB would certainly piss them off and set off a chain reaction of disgust.

Mind you, 22 years was a very long tenure, even the baby that was born on Isa's 1st year as a MB has turned into a eligible voter in Bagan Pinang today! Most of the people grew up into eligible voters under Tan Sri Isa' s leadership.

Instead of attacking Isa's past, PAS should have adopt the psychology attack strategy in wooing the young ones in Bagan Pinang by increasing their political awareness. By playing the sentiments over Isa' s candicacy against their morale barometer and religion beliefs would have driven more young voters over to PAS.

The young voters (in the age of internet) could have convinced their parents that a vote for BN is a vote to endorse their corruption practice and their super lousy way of governing the country. They could have set off a chain reaction to make people accept PAS and PR as the better party for Malaysia.

Fortunately for PAS, you need not to look far, as the answers were staring right in your face. The answers were so clear that there's something wrong with PAS when Zulkefly Omar could not answer these questions (below) posted by TheNutGraph (on 7 Oct 2009 http://www.thenutgraph.com/zulkefly-omars-dilemma):
    • What is his stand on concert banning, as called for by central PAS Youth against both Danish soft-rock band Michael Learns to Rock and US R&B diva Beyonce Knowles.?

    • What is his stand on the open sale of alcohol?

    • What is his position on the whipping sentence dropped on Kartika Sari Dewi Sukarno?
Have you give it a thought on why Zulkefly Omar (ZO) refused or could not offer any answers to the 3 questions above? Was it his fault to not able to answer those questions? Perhaps ZO did not know what was the real party's stand on those 3 issues.
    1. Whenever PAS-DAP-PKR met and came out with the statement "the matters were solved" at then end of the meeting, he did not know exactly what they really meant by the word "solved" because PR NEVER explained how the matter was solved.

PAS did NOT explain what was their final stand on those issues. If ZO was confused about his party's stand, I believed the voters were even MORE confused.

    2. Whenever there's a controversial statement made by a certain PAS leaders, PAS top leaderships NEVER responded quickly enough to counter those statements.

More often than not, they let those controversial statements to float around until enough damage was done before stepping in. Most of the time, they would tell everyone that. "The matter is now closed." WITHOUT telling us exactly what's their final stand was.

In the end, the people are left alone to judge PAS' s stand on their own, and this is bad for the party.

    3. ZO had the answers to the above questions, but he knew his answers were going to piss off Pakatan Rakyat leaders or the non-Muslim voters so he decided to stay mum.

PAS itself dug the hole subconsciously for playing the rat race with UMNO to prove who is more Islamic between them.

    4. In the BEER fiasco, PAS Selangor was probably trying to prove themselves they are the real protector of Islam instead of UMNO. It was just a mind game without strategy to prove a useless point using the wrong way.

Is there a need to prove PAS is more Islamic than UMNO by playing such high-stakes game? Is there a need to be caught up in this game while getting yourself being cornered politically?

    5. Something is terribly wrong with the people perception of PAS lately.

After a series of victory in Peninsular by-elections, PAS has lost track on its real focus. During these times, PAS did not do anything to improve itself, instead they are actually regressing to the old PAS.

    6. Since March 08, PAS has stopped putting in more effort into turning 'PAS for ALL' slogan into actions. They hallucinated that the non-Muslims votes are going to stay with them as long as 'PAS for ALL' slogan is chanted everyday like the 1Malaysia slogan.

They forgot about the 'value of the people believing' in 'PAS for ALL' slogan was the recipe why people across racial divides decided to vote for them in all previous by-elections.

PAS's internal bickering since the unity government fiasco had sent a variety of confusing signals about PAS's real identity to the rakyat. The benefit of the doubts that the rakyat gave to PAS on the past few by-elections are now gone for good.

PAS has to restart to brand themselves all over again. Rhetoric and slogans can only last so long as they refused or ignorant to learn from current UMNO's predicament.

    7. Who are the real you, PAS? If you happened to forget who you are, PAS, allow me to remind you.

PAS is a multi racial party who fights for Islam.

You are NOT a Malay party like UMNO, but you are just a party dominated by Malays.

So, now how does PAS want to show its Islamic side to be accepted by all MALAY-sians?The rakyat knows that PAS and Islam is inseparable. Therefore, fighting for Islam is completely acceptable to non-Muslims.

The only problem is that lately it seemed very evident to the non-Muslims that PAS put more focus on petty issues rather than the big picture in their fight for Islam, which is to emphasis on fighting corruption, "kebajikan awam", fairness and transparency in all PR state's government.

PAS, you need to find your way back fast! Remember "PAS for ALL" was your best selling slogan, now you just have to focus to put it into actions. It is just that simple!

You paid a very cheap price in Bagan Pinang to realise that something has gone wrong in your struggle and focus.

You should be glad that "Status-quo" is the cheapest price to lose an election for a good wake-up call!
    From Readers of Malaysiakini:

  • Pakatan Rakyat needs to get its act together. It is time the opposition coalition had a conference where controversial policies/decisions can be debated for a win-win situation. Paying lip service is not good enough; more needs to be done for the poor of every race. A fair policy on race relations is urgently needed.

  • The results clearly show that Anwar Ibrahim should reconsider the position of PAS in Pakatan. The people are sick and tired of extremists such as Hasan Ali and Nasharudin Mat Isa. If Pakatan doesn't settle these issues, they might suffer at the next elections just because of some rotten apples. It's time for Anwar to set things straight.

  • This is a very good result. This is a wake-up call for Pakatan especially PAS. Start practising what you preach - 'PAS for all'. In Selangor, Hasan Ali needs to stop his beer ban, concert ban, etc. Selangor comprises of non- Muslims too and we are part of the 'all' in 'PAS for all. Between the devil and the deep blue sea, the people of Bagan Pinang chose a corrupt leader - the devil they know rather than the PAS devil they don't know. PAS has to learn to tread the middle ground and learn from Indonesia where its Parliament rejected an Islamic state and opted for a secular constitution.

  • PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub is living in denial. Salahuddin knows that it is because of a PAS problem (Hasan Ali and his Islamic state) that the by-election was lost. Still, he has the audacity to blame the loss on the whole Pakatan team. He should resign. The whole lot of PAS extremists should be kicked out. Only then will the Chinese and Indians vote for Pakatan.

  • Pakatan has not shown itself to be a team. It does not seem to be able to stand up and speak clearly on what its direction is. It is not seen to be working but is spending its time and energy fighting within itself. So if we cannot trust Pakatan on a pragmatic level, it becomes 'the devil we know rather than the devil we don't'. Hence, unless Pakatan really pulls up its socks, perhaps if we vote BN, eg, in Kampung Kerinchi/ Pantai Dalam, the roads can be cleaned, the traffic problem solved, the hawkers relocated, etc,

UPDATED: Bagan Pinang By-Election:Chinese and Indian Voters Returned to UMNO/BN. Selangor PAS's Hassan Ali's Role in PAS's Disastrous Result

    Quote:

" ... (On the swing of Chinese votes to UMNO/BN), the Chinese community has been keeping a close watch on Pakatan's progress, especially in Selangor, since the last general election.

They see that we are not serious in proving our unity with the internal conflicts we have been facing lately.

The Chinese wanted to send a clear signal to Pakatan to teach us a lesson.

Pakatan need to be more serious in addressing the woes faced by the INDIAN community. Pakatan is not doing enough. In the last (general) election we got strong support from the Indian community... they had no choice, there was no alternative and they had high expectations of Pakatan.

I would say that their (Indian) support is not as solid as it was in the last election (for Pakatan)..."

UMNO /BN Victory Came from Chinese and Indian Voters

    Excerpts:

    Read here for more

A landslide win for Mohd. Isa could only signify a few pertinent things.

Bagan Pinang is a small township:
    • It has three army camps and eight army outfits within its boundaries.

    • It has registered voter base of 13,664 voters (14,192 in 2008) made up from 62.3% Malays, 20.7% Indians, 11% Chinese and 6% Others.

    • Postal votes account for 33.7% of the total votes.

    • The turnout according to the Election Commission is 81.65%.
    The Election Result:
    1. Mohd. Isa collected 8,013 votes (71.8 %). Of which, 3,521 came from postal votes (ie 31.6 %). To be fair, the postal votes were real killers. To win 85.4% of the postal votes or 31.6% of the total votes finished off whatever high hopes Pakatan dreamt of. Even if there were zero postal votes or if the votes were tied, Isa would nevertheless have had an easy romp home.

    2. Zulkefly Mohamad Omar’s 2,578 votes. (28.2 %) He got only 601 from postal votes
The CHINESE and INDIANS Overwhelmingly Voted for Isa Samad

Look at the percentages. The figures do not lie.

The Malay vote only accounted for 62.3% but Mohd. Isa won by 71.8%. Hypothetically, if 80% of the Malays voted for Isa, that would mean that only 50% of the 71.8% is accounted for.

Where did the other 21.8% come from?

The answer is easy. It came from the Indian and Chinese voters.

The total of both the Indian and Chinese voters is 31.8%.

This means that more than two-thirds (68.6%) of Chinese and Indians voted for Mohd. Isa.

The swing back to BN is 14.2% (from 2008).

    Implications for Pakatan Rakyat

Pakatan had better start doing something about it cos they need to win over such rural voters, and not just rely on the urban voters.

Relying on the non-Malay voters in Bagan Pinang was evidently disastrous.

In 2008, about 80% of the Indians and 65% of the Chinese voted opposition. (These figures are obtained from political analyst Dr Wan Abdul Rahman Wan Abdul Latiff.) That is approximately 74.8% non-Malays voting for the opposition. Now it has dropped to 31.4%.

What exactly happened here? Can the actions of one PAS Commissioner (in Selangor) be so damning on another PAS Commissioner (in Negeri Sembilan)?

Why are these state seats so important when the formation of the federal government is decided by parliamentary seats?

The answer is this – can Pakatan guarantee parliamentary victory during the next elections?

If the answer is in the negative, then it is these state governments that Pakatan must attempt to secure and subsequently be utilized as a home base to propagate the Opposition ideology and to inhibit the BN propaganda.

So, what does this BN victory means? It damn well means a lot of things but mostly, it means that :
    1. Pakatan can no longer contend to split the Malay vote and allow the non-Malay vote to be the deciding factor.

    2. The NON -Malay votes are not entirely swinging to the Opposition.

    3. Rural voters are still voting for BN.

    4. Time for Pakatan to start selecting their potential candidates now and permit them the time to start campaigning in their selected constituencies.

    5. Pakatan needs to be more prominent in the rural constituencies.

    6. Public spats between the three parties and party back stabbing are having a definite negative effect on the voters.
If Pakatan does nothing, the next election is as good as lost.

2013 is another 3 years plus of BN rule and Najib will be utilising this time to consolidate his position.

If Pakatan does not make any progress between now and then, it will be 2018 before anything can be done and who knows whether Malaysia will still be solvent then.

Isa Samad won because he was a very popular chief minister of Negri Sembilan. The Chinese community had benefited from his largess. Yes, kiss the hand that feeds you. The fact that PAS got handily knocked down should serve to teach PAS (and the Opposition in general) several lessons.

PAS has yet got lots of leg-work to do – especially in Umno’s backyard:

      1. to bring a bigger chunk of the Malay electorate (the military notwithstanding) along.

      2. Second, (PAS's) ability to attract the non-Malay vote especially where PAS’ credentials are still suspect. This latter point, of course, should serve as an unambiguous reminder to the fanatic faction of PAS that steering the party to the fringes of extremism will only serve to make them a perpetually regional party with a naturally limited appeal.

      3. It is not going to be good enough for PAS to merely harp on Umno’s failings; it is going to have to emerge as a party with a MODERATE agenda.

    • (What ) Bagan Pinang reminds is that PAS CANNOT assume that it will become the default beneficiary of Umno’s ailment.

While Umno may be corrupted and may even field a tainted candidate, the fact remains that voters in Bagan Pinang and many other pockets of the country will still opt for Umno than PAS.

However, PAS can do wonders to change that scenario if it can craft a moderate enough message and image to appeal to the centrist voters.

PAS’ breakthrough will come precisely when it can win in a demographic such as Bagan Pinang. And that will require being able to reach enough non-Malay and Malay centrist voters.

Umno’s corruption may be disgusting, but enough voters still seem to be suspicious of PAS’ EXTREMISTS. Read here for more

PR's has not been blending well in Selangor with the continual bickerings between Hassan Ali and DAP.

I say Hassan Ali because he is the only person coming out with statement after statement, contradicting to PR's wishes and aspirations.

PAS failed to contain Hassan Ali and at the same time did not indicate that they are totally behind Hassan Ali's stand regarding the many issues surrounding PR government in Selangor.

With the "not here, neither there" stand, PAS under the leadership of Hadi Awang fails to take a firm stand on those issues.

Granted that PAS and DAP reached some sort of consensus during Bagan Pinang by-election campaign period. However, the consensus appears to be superficial at best. This can be sensed with the lack of "controversies" raised by the controversial Hassan Ali. If only someone in PAS monitors his statements then PAS would have anticipated that they are on the losing end in Bagan Pinang when Hassan Ali did not issue any controversial statement during the campaign period. Bagan Pinang By-Election: Negeri Sembilan Voters Overwhelmingly Prefer UMNO's Confirmed Corrupt ISA SAMAD to be their Elected Representative

    Quote

"... For the good of the party (UMNO) , the dignity of the MALAY community it claims to represent , and for the sake of the nationwide reform in governance and politics that we must undergo, it would be better if Umno lost today, and used the loss to begin internal reform.

This is because again we have fielded a candidate proven to be corrupt.

A win by Isa (Samad) would translate into an endorsement of corruption-as-usual within the party and the government that it leads.

Much as the likely win by Isa would be welcomed by the leadership after the string of losses Umno has suffered, I am afraid what the nation needs is for Umno to lose again.

Corruption is the scourge of the country. Umno is a step away from being identified with that scourge.."

    Excerpts

A victory for Isa Samad in the Bagan Pinang by-election would translate into an endorsement for corruption says former Umno vice-president Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

    He said,
"Much as the likely win by Isa would be welcomed by the leadership after the string of losses Umno has suffered, I am afraid what the nation needs is for Umno to lose again. This is because again we have fielded a candidate proven to be corrupt.

A win by Isa would translate into an endorsement of corruption-as-usual within the party and the government that it leads.

For the good of the party, the dignity of the Malay community it claims to represent and for the sake of the nationwide reform in governance and politics that we must undergo, it would be better if Umno lost today, and used the loss to begin internal reform.

Corruption is the scourge of the country. Umno is a step away from being identified with that scourge."
From the onset, Tengku Razaleigh had voiced his dissatisfaction against Umno's decision to field Isa, the former menteri besar of Negeri Sembilan.

Isa was suspended from Umno in 2004 after being found guilty of money politics during the party polls.

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad was also unhappy with the choice.

Bagan Pinang By-Election: Rasuah Menjadi HALAL Jika Terbabit dengan Pemimpin Umno

    Read here for more

    UMNO/BN's Candidate
    for Bagan Pinang (N.Sembilan) By-Election

    Quote

    Menyusuri kerjaya politik Isa Samad:

    2. Kemudian dilantik menjadi Ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan (Exco) Negri Sembilan sehingga PRU 1982. Selepas itu beliau dilantik menjadi Menteri Besar sehingga tahun 2004.

    3. Tahun 1993, Isa bertanding merebut jawatan Ketua Pemuda Umno, tetapi beliau tewas kepada Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik.

    4. Dalam Perhimpunan Agung Umno tahun 2000, Isa bertanding merebut jawatan Naib Presiden Umno tetapi tewas.

    5. Pada PRU 2004, Isa bertanding di kawasan Parlimen Jempol. Beliau kemudiannya dilantik menjadi Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan sehingga 2005.

    6. Isa memenangi jawatan Naib Presiden Umno bagi penggal 2004-2007 dengan memperoleh 1,507 undi iaitu tertinggi mengatasi Ketua Menteri Melaka, Datuk Mohd Ali Rustam (1,329 undi) dan Menteri Perdagangan Antarabangsa dan Industri ketika itu, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (1,234 undi).

Isa Samad digantung Keahlian UMNO Kerana Rasuah

    7. Bagaimanapun Lembaga Disiplin Umno menggantung keahliannya selama tiga tahun (24 Jun 2005 hingga 23 Jun 2008) kerana didapati bersalah terbabit dalam amalan politik wang dalam Perhimpunan Agung Umno 2004.
