Odd-job worker Nazarudin Kamaruddin, 46, an Indonesian national with permanent resident status was sentenced to a year's jail and six strokes of rotan for consuming alcohol in public.
Nazarudin has lived in Malaysia for 33 years and has become the first person to be jailed for drinking alcohol in public.
The bachelor was charged with consuming samsu at Paramount Restaurant in Jalan Pasar at 10am on Aug 27.
Syariah court judge Datuk Abdul Rahman Md Yunos is the SAME judge who ordered earlier a Malaysian woman of Indonesian descent, Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, to be given six strokes of the rotan and fined RM 5,000 after she pleaded guilty to consuming beer at a hotel in Cherating two years ago.
Both Nazarudin and Kartika were convicted in Pahang, the home state of PM Najib.
The Pahang Religious Department (Jaip) will expedite the caning of Kartika, a part-time model and mother of two children, after Hari Raya Aidilfitri should the Syariah Appeal Court uphold the decision of the Syariah High Court.

I am puzzled as to why only foreigners are convicted for this offence ( at least so far reported). This really encourages one to coin it as a "witch hunt".
if u r muslims pls obey the god-made laws ok ? ....unless ...!
I AM PUZZLED TOO AS TO WHY DIFFERENT STATES HAVE DIFFERENT SET OF RULES AND PUNISHMENT. WHERE IS THAT SO CALLED 1MALAYSIA CONCEPT?
