Siasat Kickdefella Dibawah Akta Hasutan (23 August 2008)

Salaam saya buat Timbalan Ketua Polis Negara

Mufti Asri Zainul Abidin Says,Ceramah At Mosques Should NOT Be Too Loud

Read here for more

Perlis Mufti Dr Asri Zainul Abidin said ceramah at mosques should NOT be broadcast TOO LOUD to a point where it disturbs the neighbourhood, especially those held in the evenings.

“Other than the azan, other activities at the mosques, including private prayers, should NOT be broadcast at decibels deemed to be DISRUPTIVE to neighbours in the area,” Dr Asri said after a motivation talk at Balai Islam.

He said yesterday the call for azan (prayer times) should be broadcast accordingly and clearly to remind Muslims in the area to perform their requirement of praying five times daily.

He said Islam did not require its activities in mosques to disrupt the lives of others as what was enshrined in its teachings.

Dr Asri also defended his stance that the Internal Security Act (ISA) was unIslamic and disputed the contention of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ahmad Zahid had said the definition of ISA was that it concerned national security and not religious practices.

Deciphering the Muslim call to prayer (Azan)

Excerpts: Read here for more

(Some of ) these Umno-inspired NGOs know nuts about Islam: they not only give a bad image to Islam, but also embarrass knowledgeable Muslims through their sheer ignorance about matters related to fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and Syariah.

One such IGNORANCE is laid bare when Muslim Consumers Association president Maamor Osman, was reported to have lumped both the call of azan and kuliah (lectures) into the category of “Syiar Islam”, and therefore no one should question these.

"Syiar Islam" is derived from the Arabic Sha’a’ir al-Islam, meaning 'rituals of Islam'.

The kuliah, for the kind information of Maamor and his likes, has NEVER been considered a ritual in Islam, whether formal or informal.

Coming from a group whose modus operandi is generating unnecessary panic among Muslim consumers about the halal-ness of a certain brand of food, I, like any practising and five-time praying Muslim who is clear about the principles of halal and haram in Islam, am not at all surprised.

Such is the state of Muslims in Malaysia that these ‘defenders of Islam’ who usually come out protesting in their childish uniforms and jackets, are allowed to carry on with their negative da’wah about Islam.

With the exception of the Mufti of Perlis, none of the officers from any of the Islamic departments have come out to clear the confusion among non-Muslims, and indeed Muslims too, about Islam.

Notwithstanding the accusation over the azan - hurled at Kok - is now proven false both by her own denial and the statement by the mosque involved, the damage to the Islamic call to prayer has been done.

Etiquette of Azan

Muslims have a duty to correct the wrong messages sent about AZAN.

The azan was made obligatory and part of the Syariah during the first year after the migration of the early Muslims from Mecca to Medina.

It was Umar al-Khattab, who was to be the second caliph after the Prophet's death, who suggested that a person call the others to prayer, to which the Prophet instructed a black Muslim youth, Bilal, to make the call to prayer (hence the name Bilal in some languages becoming synonym to the word ‘muezzin’).

The azan as we hear it today has not changed a bit in its style of presentation since the Prophet’s times.

The whole purpose of the azan is to make it audible enough for people to hear.

When modern PA system was introduced and became an inseparable tool for azan ever since, this requirement was easily fulfilled.

With rapid urbanisation in the Muslim world, the call to the obligatory prayers naturally became louder, so as not to be drowned out by the sound of traffic and other modern day noises.

In most NON-Muslim countries, the use of loudspeakers for azan is banned. Thus the azan, heard five times a day, was confined mostly to the Muslim world and characterises the environment of any Muslim country.

But what is the etiquette of azan in Islam?

Because AZAN is a form of worship, the azan too is bound by certain etiquette.

Ibn al-Jawzi the 12th-century Muslim jurist, said,

“I have seen people staying up a part of the night on the minaret admonishing the people, making remembrance [of God] and reciting the Qur’an in a loud voice. They keep people from sleeping and disturb those who are making late-night prayers. These are rejected and evil actions.”
This goes on to show that the azan, since time immemorial, has had a STRICT set of guidelines, like any other formal Muslim worship. And this applies even in exclusively Muslim locations.

Muhammad Taqi Usmani, who served for two decades at the Shariah Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan until 2002, and whose famous judgement on usury has become an important reference material for students of Islamic law and economics, has written on the tendency of some mosques toABUSE the azan.

The prominent judge chided some who abused the use of loudspeakers in mosques, which not only hurt the people LIVING AROUND the mosques, but also created resentments against mosque managements and other religious circles.

While the use of loudspeakers complements the objective of the azan to be heard in distant places and therefore is advisable, the same is NOT true of sermons, Qur’anic recitations or any other activities, such as the commonly held religious lectures (kuliah) in Malaysian mosques.

Muslim JURISTS are unanimous that the recitation of the Qur’an in a loud voice is NOT allowed just to get people listen to it while they are engaged in other activities.

As such, blasting it by using external loudspeakers, as in some mosques, comes under the same PROHIBIT act.

  1. The Prophet's wife A’ishah had once advised a religious orator in the following words, “Restrict your voice to your audience and address them only as far as they are attentive to your speech. When they turn their faces from you, stop.” Such was the care taken to avoid possible disturbance from the speaker. More importantly, this was expressed at a time when loudspeakers were not even in existence!

  2. Ata ibn Abi Rabah, a jurist and scholar of Hadith, once said: "The voice of a learned man should NOT exceed his audience."

  3. In another tradition narrated by the companion Abdullah ibn Umar, the second caliph Umar al-Khattab was said to have punished a man who used to deliver his speech in a LOUD voice.

  4. Mufti Taqi Usmani concludes with these words: "In the light of this principle, the LOUDSPEAKER SHOUD NOT be used at all [during prayer] where the number of audience is such that they can hear the voice of the recitation [during prayer] or of the sermon without a loudspeaker. However, if there are many in number and cannot hear the voice directly, only the inner loudspeaker should be used, and not the loudspeaker installed outside the mosque."
Irresponsible UMNO Politicians and Utusan Malaysia

It is mischievous and irresponsible of some Umno politicians and their mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia to play up the azan issue.

The azan, like many other things in Malaysia, is considered ‘sensitive’ and therefore is fast fitting itself into the list of racialist issues in Malaysia’s racialist politics.

Muslims in Malaysia have a greater and heavier responsibility for Islam, because they live in a society with large non-Muslim minorities.

Muslims must pick their battles, and know WHEN to come to the defence of Islam.

The AZAN , which only lasts five minutes, is hardly noise pollution, but soothes hardened hearts and provides a divinely inspired music to remind us how mundane and materialistic our life is. As the Arabic saying goes, if one is not moved by melody, he is neither a man, nor a woman, but an ass.

If the azan is to be banned, I would be the first one to protest, even if I fail to answer its melodious invitation to attend the congregation at the mosque five times a day.

The mark of a successful Muslim community is how attractive its religion has become for the other communities.

In MALAYSIA, non-Muslims continue to have suspicions about Islam through NO fault of theirs, but because Muslims themselves CANNOT differentiate between becoming a Malay and living as a true Muslim, as Raja Petra has rightly pointed out through his many writings.

Someone once observed that as the Muslim civilisation declines, mosques grow in number, size and beauty, so as to compensate for their decay.

At the same time, the number who attend mosques decreases, even as the call to prayer can now reach every nook and corner.

One may add, in the present context, that as Muslims lag behind in all spheres, their RELIGIOUS LECTURES tend to be LOUDER than ever.

Anwar Ibrahim's Press Statement on the Transfer of Power

From Malaysiakini: Read here and here in Malaysia-Today

The following is the statement given by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim at a 2pm press conference at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.
Today, Malaysians celebrate Malaysia Day - the day our country became whole and our people become united. This day has a new meaning. After years of struggle, after fighting against a system that is corrupt and unjust - we affirm that victory is finally at hand. Our vision of rebuilding this country and bringing its people together, as the founding fathers envisioned, is within reach.

The economy is in turmoil with runaway inflation and joblessness creating widespread discontent. Racial tensions have been rising, exacerbated by the propaganda spread in the government owned mainstream media. The administration has offered no vision to steer the nation out of this quagmire and there is manifest erosion in confidence in the current government.

We in Pakatan Rakyat believe we can save Malaysia from economic ruin and the dangerous politics of racism. We will do so prudently, legally and in doing so we will not jeopardise the security and stability of the country and the safety of its people.

We have received firm commitments from members of parliament in excess of the number required to form a new government, and our government will reflect the diverse make-up of Malaysian society.

It has been our concern to ensure a peaceful transition of power. We do not wish to see a repeat of what transpired in the Selangor and Perak state governments, where following the victory of Pakatan Rakyat on March 8, documents were shredded and removed by the outgoing administration.

We furthermore advise radical elements within BN against the abuse of state power to unlawfully harass and detain our supporters.

The immediate investigation by the ACA (Anti-Corruption Agency) of Yong Teck Lee after the announcement by SAPP (Sabah Progressive Party) of its intention to move a motion of no-confidence against Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is another example of the tactics we reject.

The use of the ISA, as has happened to MP Teresa Kok, would be an unlawful impediment to the transition process.

In light these serious concerns, yesterday leaders of Pakatan Rakyat sent a letter to the prime minister at 2.30pm requesting a meeting to discuss the future course of the nation's leadership and to seek his assurance on the following important matters:

1) That the BN shall not hinder or prevent their BN MPs from acting in accordance with their conscience, constitutional rights and independent judgment;

2) That the BN government shall not invoke the Internal Security Act to detain any of the MPs who will join Pakatan Rakyat, or any of the present 82 Pakatan Rakyat MPs;

3) That the BN government shall not invoke emergency or police powers, or suspend the constitution, or dissolve parliament in response to our intention to form a new government;

4) That the Barisan Nasional government shall not impose roadblocks and impede the MPs from gaining access to the House of Parliament and the institutions of government.

We believe the prime minister will share Pakatan Rakyat's concerns for the welfare of the people and security of the nation. We are confident he will ensure the BN will act constitutionally and democratically to ensure that the transition will be peaceful, and there will be no actions taken to sabotage the wishes of the people or play on racial tensions in the country.

We appeal to all quarters in Malaysian society to understand our intentions are for the betterment of Malaysian society. The mainstream media, in particular, should accept the reality of these historic times and report fairly, accurately and without bias. The irresponsible tact that is used by the media to obfuscate issues, attack opposition supporters and instigate racial tensions must end immediately.

Following our meeting with the prime minister, we intend to proceed within the framework established by the federal constitution in the formation of a new government, with the assent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA, 16 SEPTEMBER 2008

1) Agar Barisan Nasional tidak menghalang ahli parlimennya dari bertindak menurut suara hati mereka, hak yang dijamin undang-undang serta keputusan yang mereka buat tanpa paksaan;

2) BN tidak boleh menggunakan Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri untuk menahan ahli parlimen yang berhasrat untuk menyertai Pakatan Rakyat atau ahli parlimen Pakatan Rakyat yang berjumlah 82 itu;

3) Kerajaan BN tidak seharusnya menggunakan kuasa darurat, kuasa polis, atau menggantung perlembagaan mahupun membubarkan parlimen di dalam usaha mereka untuk menghalang Pakatan Rakyat dari berkuasa;

PAS Tok Guru Nik Aziz Ticks Off Mustafa Ali, an UMNO-Mole in PAS from Trengganu

Mustafa Ali is the Pas Commssioner for Trengganu and considered by many as an UMNO-mole in PAS.

He is one of the three PAS leaders which include the PAS Deputy President Nasharudin (also from Trengganu) who were responsible for the "secret meetings" with UMNO leaders.

Mustafa Ali is a proponent of PAS joing UMNO to protect the interests of Islam in the country.

Harakah quoted Mustafa Ali as saying that the change of government on September will not happen and it was only a statement from the Opposition Leader (Anwar Ibrahim).

Tok Guru Nik Aziz was visibly upset by that statement, saying Mustafa Ali's comment did not represent the views of the PAS leaders and the consensus of the Muktamar, adding:

Tok Guru Nik Aziz became visibly upset over Mustafa Ali's comments (see video below- put on your speakers)

VIDEO: Tok Guru Nik Aziz-
APA SALAHNYA KALAU KITA KATAKAN 16 SEPTEMBER BERJAYA

According to Shieh of "
Kickdefella" blog, the following statement was made by PAS's Tok Guru Nik Aziz Nik Mat and it was prevented from being published in PAS's news daily, HARAKAH, by certain "black hands" with influence over the publication of HARAKAH.

(Note: We are unable to confirm independently that the following statement came from or sanctioned by Tok Guru Niz Aziz as coming from him -Malaysian Unplug)
TERENGGANU SALAH PILIH PESURUHJAYA

Meredakan hati siapa? Hati pemimpin Umno?

Latest !! Pakatan Rakyat Sent Letter to PM for Smooth Transition of Power

From Malaysiakini: Read here for more and from Anil Netto blog

(Photos courtesy of TV Smith)
Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim told a 20,000-strong rally that he had the numbers to form a new government TOMORROW (September 16) and wants to meet with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to discuss a handover.

According to him, Pakatan Rakyat has submitted a letter to Abdullah today seeking a meeting for a smooth transition of power.

Anwar said,

"Tonight, on the eve of Malaysia Day, we are ready to form the government TOMORROW (September 16).

We have the numbers to defeat BN. Tomorrow is D-day, we are ready to form the government.

Tomorrow, we are ready. The test would be when we are able to disucss this with the PM, giving him ample evidence, in order to ensure peaceful transition .
A peaceful transition is paramount.

“How can we be on track for 916 when they send the MPs to Taiwan and then they detain Teresa? I want to stress we have the numbers.

I want to guarantee that when we take over, we will not follow the law of the jungle or vengeance."

He told journalists after the rally,"I believe that the government will fall in the next few weeks,"

“The process has begun,” confirms a senior PKR leader. “Tomorrow, emissaries are going to try and meet the PM, and if that doesn’t materialise, Anwar will start the process.”

Tian Chua wrote in his blog:

"We are on track!!!!!We have got the number, and now we are ready to govern and to serve on 916!

No worries, we promise you a very smooth transition from BN to Pakatan!

We must give full credit to the people of Malaysia for their courage and determination, 16 Sept 2008 will be a new chapter for Malaysia.

This is the landmark for the fullfillment of freedom, democracy and properity that has been promised to all citizen by the independence."

Many people at the rally who spoke to Malaysiakini also expressed confidence of an impending change.

"He may reveal the first batch of defectors and maybe on how they will approach the king. I think they will wrap it up and form a new government by the end of this month," said retiree G Maniam.

"I am surprised at how fast things are changing," said another Pakatan supporter at the stadium, Anthony Tong. The 52-year-old accountant from Cheras said that he would not be disappointed even if Anwar managed to seize power by the end of this year.

Deputy IGP Tan Sri Ismail Omar's Explanation of the ISA Arrests is Hypocritical and Unbelievable

Press Statement by the Deputy IGP, Tan Sri Ismail Omar

Excerpts of the Press Statement: Read here for more

.... In recent weeks, there has been an escalation of racially insensitive, seditious and disparaging acts and remarks by individuals and organisations bringing about a state of unrest and religious tension in the country.

When the police decided to invoke the ISA, the decision was based on intelligence and observation that certain acts by the individuals concerned were detrimental to the calm, peace and harmony of the country.

These acts if not curtailed would cause public disorder and be a threat to national security. An arrest under the ISA is only made when the police strongly believes that certain acts by individual can pose a serious threat to public order and national security. ..."

We Say,

WHY didn't the POLICE arrest Ahmad Ismail for his public racist outbursts, Khir Toyo for attempting to cause racial and religious discontent in the minds of Malaysians, and Editor-in-Chief of Utusan Malaysia who had published these false allegations on a Member of Parliament and a Senior Exco Member of the Selangor Government, couched with dangerous racial and religious connotation and insinuations?

And, for that matter, WHY wasn't arrest made on the writer of the article in Utusan Malaysia, senior editor Zaini Hassan of Utusan Malaysia, who had wrongly accused Teresa Kok on the "azan issue" which led to her arrest by the POLICE ?

WHY didn't the POLICE conduct a more professional investigation on the "Azan" issue BEFORE slapping the ISA on Teresa Kok who is, by all accounts, innocent of the allegations by Khir Toyo and Zaini Hassan of Utusan Malaysia?

And WHY wasn't a more competent investigation done by the POLICE before making a fool of themselves in arresting the Sin Chew Daily journalist, Ms Tan Hoon Cheng who was just doing her job reporting Ahmad Ismail's racist remarks?

WHAT national security damage has Raja Petra Kamarudin done besides doing his moral duty as a law-abiding citizen exposing the sickening politics, misdemeanors and corrupt practices of the UMNO-led BN Government?

Malaysians have the full right to DEMAND for answers to the above from the POLICE FORCE, being an institution PUBLICLY funded by, and therefore fully accountable to Malaysian TAXPAYERS, for the actions and performance of its personnel.

What it amounts to in the minds of Malaysians is that this whole scandalous affair of recent ISA arrests either reflects the total INCOMPETENCE of Malaysian POLICE FORCE when given the responsibility to investigate matters of public and national interest, OR simply that the POLICE FORCE is being subjugated to use its limited and valuable manpower and resources to engage in the partisan politics of the ruling political parties.

By the way, little Nurin's murderer(s) are yet to be caught. It is now more than 365 days since she was killed and the POLICE has nothing to offer to-date on little Nurin's murder.

If Deputy IGP Tan Sri Ismail Omar is still not aware, Malaysians want to be reassured of their safety and security against criminals and serial killers, NOT against respected bloggers, journalists doing their job and opposition party politicians who speak their minds up.

The selective arrests by the POLICE of innocent citizens and allowing the more obvious provocateurs such as Ahmad Ismail and Khir Toyo to escape from the claws of the ISA, smack of POLICE bias.

Tan Sri Ismail Omar's press statement to justify the POLICE action to use the ISA is incredulous and for an average minded person, hard to swallow.

It is our view therefore that the explanation given by Deputy IGP Tan Sri Ismail Omar for the above arrests is wishy-washy at best, and suspicious at worst.

We won't be wrong to say that Malaysians cannot be that stupid to buy the explanation for the ISA arrests as made in the press statement of the Deputy IGP.

Illogical Statement By The Police

From The Aisehman Blog: Read here

"...Okay, so what did RPK and Teresa Kok do?

You know what? Even the police DON'T know.

God-in-heaven ridiculous, innit?

Think about it.

The police say that the decision to go ahead with the detentions “was based on intelligence and observation that certain acts by the individuals concerned were detrimental to the calm, peace and harmony of the country” and that “an arrest under the ISA is only made when the police strongly believes that certain acts by individual can pose a serious threat to public order and national security.”

In other words, RPK and Teresa Kok HAD committed “certain acts … detrimental to the calm, peace and harmony of the country”, and so they were detained, because police believe these very acts “pose a serious threat to public order and national security”.

Keep in mind — HAD committed.

But here comes the baffling part — the police then say that the purpose of the detentions was to give them “time to investigate further on their alleged involvement in acts that can be considered as prejudicial to the security of the country”.

“Alleged involvement”?? All of a sudden, the previous certainty melts away into mere belief.

You said earlier that RPK and Teresa Kok were detained for acts they HAD committed; acts that were “detrimental to the calm, peace and harmony of the country”.

So HOW has this turned into “allegedly involved” after you detained them?

Did RPK and Teresa Kok commit those acts or did they not?

If they DID, and you arrested them under the ISA for those acts, where is the need then to investigate their “alleged involvement” in acts you say were the reason they were detained in the first place?

Do all of you see how ILLOGICAL the statement is?

Nampak, Tan Sri? Think about it.

This sounds too much like you’re making it up as you go along.

IF I MAY ASK, what EXACTLY did Teresa Kok do to merit the distinction of being detained under the ISA?

Did she question the use of louspeakers to broadcast the azan and/or religious ceramah?

Well, Tan Sri, she most certainly did NOT.

AND one more thing, Tan Sri.

You say that “in the interest of the nation’s peace and harmony, the police will act without fear or favour.”

Then why have the police not arrested Khir Toyo and Ahmad Ismail?

Mufti Dr Asri Zainul Abidin BLASTED the Use of ISA by UMNO-led Govt to DEFEND ISLAM

Read here article in Harakah Daily

Quote:
"Orang Yang Mengaku Islam Perlu Baca"

ISA tidak diperlukan untuk bela Islam
-Read here for more

Kata Dr Asri, isu agama turut membabitkan sensitiviti agama lain.

Beliau turut mengingatkan betapa bahayanya tindakan ISA.

Khir Toyo Falsely Accused MP Teresa Kok With the Aim of Creating Racial and Religious Hatred Against DAP and the Chinese Community

We Say,

Former Selangor Menter Besar Khir Toyo implicated Selangor Senior Exco member Teresa Kok on the "azan" issue as part of his concerted effort to incite racial and religious hatred by the Malays/Muslims against the Chinese community in Selangor.

The Editor-in-Chief of Utusan Malaysia did not check the facts prior to publication of the false allegation made by Khir Toyo, instead Utusan Malaysia raised the tone of the allegations to a more dangerous level.

Both Khir Toyo and Editor-in-Chief of Utusan Malaysia had malicious design in falsely accusing Teresa Kok. It is apparent that both of them aimed to achieve a wider objective of fanning racial and religious discontent and hatred by Malay/Muslims against the Chinese community, which in our view, seriously endangers our national security.

Khir Toyo and the Editor-in-Chief of Utusan Malaysia must be arrested and brought to justice for falsely accusing Teresa Kok on the "azan" issue.

If Syed Hamid Albar wants to use the ISA, he should instead go out and arrest the 189 residents who had politely written a letter to UMNO State Assemblyman Mohamad Satim Diman to talk to the mosque officials to help resolve their concerns about lowering the loudspeakers at the mosque during the long hours of the religious sermons.

The residents' petition was made BEFORE the March 8 election when Khir Toyo was the Menteri Besar and when UMNO was ruling the state.

Teresa Kok had nothing to do with the petition. She only received a copy of the petition as an MP of her constituency AFTER the March 8 election.

Teresa Kok is innocent. She must not only be released immediately without conditions, but that Khir Toyo should be arrested under ISA for attempting to incite racial and religious hatred against the Chinese community in Selangor.

Justice must be SEEN to be done.

And nothing less than the arrest of Khir Toyo (more so because he is an UMNO leader) including the incarceration of the racist Ahmad Ismail , will ever satisfy Malaysians that justice HAS BEEN done, and SEEN to be done, to address this highly charged incident.

Background of the scandalous "Azan issue"

This is what Utusan Malaysia reported and quoted Khir Toyo: (read here)

[Khir Toyo implies DAP had petitioned to disallow "azan" broadcast]}

Khir Toyo further stoked the fires of racial and religious hatred against Teresa Kok and the the Chinese community when he wrote on July 9th 2008, in the Pembela Melayu blog to respond to a commenter,(read below). He alleged that Teresa Kok supported the petition.

The Facts on the Scandalous "Azan " Issue

Now, here are the facts which Khir Toyo and Utusan Malaysia failed to check and then maliciously distorted aimed at inciting racial hatred at DAP, and religious hatred at the state Government of Selangor under Pakatan Rakyat and PAS. Read here and here on Malaysiakini.

In February, 2008 (BEFORE the March 8 election when UMNO/BN was governing Selangor)189 residents signed a petition to UMNO State Assemblyman Mohamad Satim Diman to appeal for help to talk to mosque officials to REDUCE the volume of the loudspeakers during religious sermons with a copy given to the mosque authorities.

The petition was sent to Mohamad Satim with hope that he could be the mediator between the residents and the mosque authority to solve the problem.

After the March 8 elections, a copy of the petition was given to Teresa Kok as the Kinrara State assemblyman. A copy was sent to Teresa Kok was because she was the nearest state assemblyperson there apart from Mohamad Satim.

Steven Ee, the person who presented the mosque with the petition on behalf of the residents in the area, said the volume on the loudspeaker when the mosque performed the ceramah caused disturbance to them, especially on Sundays when most of them would want to "wake up late for extra rest after a long week's work".

While the azan lasts a couple of minutes, religious ceramah could go on for more than an hour.

"You can't be expecting us to move away. I believe the Muslims here understand our concerns," said Ee, who added that he was not against Islamic activities in the area.

According to Ee, his wife had met with a BN component party leader to discuss the matter and was advised by the person to draft the petition and have it sent to the relevant people.

"As advised, I started collecting signatures from the residents there and handed it over to Mohamad Satim through one of his officers at his office," explained Ee.

Ee then said he noticed that the loudspeaker's volume was lowered for about two weeks but then returned to its original pitch after that.

He also expressed hope that the Muslim residents there can cooperate with the non-Muslims on the matter for the benefit of all.

Secretary of the three-week-old mosque Ahmad Redzuan Samsudin said:

“Last Saturday (Aug 30), lightning during a thunderstorm had struck and damaged the PA system.

Thereafter, we borrowed equipment from the SMK Kota Damansara in Section 10, but problems with the wiring further delayed us from sounding the azans through the loudspeaker.

There was NO pressure from non-Muslims.”

The mosque officials have lodged a police report against former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo for claiming pressure from non-Muslims and a state exco-backed petition had forced them to stop making the azan through the loudspeaker.

We ask,

That the Home Minister, Syed Hamid Albar and the Special Branch Police should now question Khir Toyo on WHY he BLATANTLY distorted the facts and falsely accused Teresa Kok which led to her arrest under ISA.

The same should be ask of the Editor-in-Chief of Utusan Malaysia, a newspaper with the history of publishing racially charged articles against non-Malays/non Muslims.

Shouldn't Khir Toyo and the Editor-in-Chief of Utusan Malaysia be arrested under ISA for the false accusation against Teresa Kok which had large implications on racial and religious harmony in the country?

Why the double standards in the pursuance of justice?

And why should the law makers and law enforcement officials make a mockery of the law of the land?

Teresa Kok Is Innocent

Excerpts:

The Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) and the Islamic NGOs, Heritage Associations, Malay Cultural Organisations and Related Bodies Cooperation Network (Pewaris) have lodged police reports against Selangor state executive councillor Teresa Kok.

The reports were made by Pewaris advisor Rahimuddin Md Harun and PPIM Complaints Officer Mohd Nor Imran Yusuf at the Sentul district police headquarters at 11am on Sunday.
The reports were lodged over an allegation by former Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo that Kok had tried to prohibit the “azan” call to prayer at mosques and surau in Kota Damansara, Sri Serdang and Puchong Jaya. [The Star]

These people are obviously ignorant of the facts.

Let’s get this straight, once and for all:

  1. The complainants in Puchong were NOT complaining about the azan, they were complaining about ceramah broadcast.

  2. The complainants fowarded their complaint in February to Satim Diman, when BN was still in power in Selangor.

  3. Teresa Kok had nothing to do with the complaint or the complainants

  4. No one complained about the azan in Kota Damansara. The mosque in Kota Damansara did not broadcast the azan for a while because its PA system was down, not because there were complaints.
Teresa Kok is innocent.

IF ANYONE is guilty here, it is Khir Toyo.

Free Teresa Kok.

Syed Hamid Albar - Bodoh Dan Tidak Layak Menjadi Menteri

Read here article in Gelanggang Minda-Medan Bicara

Menteri Dalam Negeri Akui Salahguna Kuasa?

Oleh

Ahmad Zaki Yamani bin Zainon

So brother Ezam and Dr. Chandra (Muzaffar,) how have you been doing ? Revelling in the convenience of silence? Surely you will voice out against these detentions at this juncture to negate already massive perceptions of your bias to BN?

I personally want to see how Chandra explain this one!

And Ezam, takkan nak sokong tang BN lawan rasuah tiba-tiba pasai ISA hang nak dok diam kot? Bagi laa statement sikit.. awat? gigi taring tercabut ka? dah lupa masa kena ISA dulu?.

Nice tactic BN! Congratulations to the level 4 boys!

But remember this, your act of desperation will lead you further from being in power in the coming elections. It has a very price though, this desperate 'last resort' of yours have spelt your doom.

Notwithstanding the above, we the rakyat will wait for that single opportunity to throw you out.

We do not mind waiting for another 3 or 4 years for fresh new elections as we have already made up our minds.

We Commend the Stand of the MUSLIM PROFESSIONALS FORUM (MPF)

The problem with UMNO is that it is NEVER in-tune with the BROAD spectrum of the rakyat.

UMNO only tunes in to the greed of its cronies, to the racist tendencies of the ultra-Malays in its midsts, and to the emotionally charged outbursts of the UMNO Youth thugs and its sponsored Mat Rempits.

What UMNO needs now are NEW batch of leaders, different from the present ones, who can think out of the box and act rationally, and who have the courage to free themselves from the straight-jacket of UMNO's racist past.

UMNO's relevance today is as a MALAY party which can also look after equally the interests of NON-Malays.

Muslim Professionals Forum (MPF)
PRESS RELEASE - ISA ARRESTS

13th September 2008

The arrests of MP Theresa Kok and journalist Tan Hoon Cheng under the ISA following that of blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin raise grave concern for Malaysians.

An endearing legacy of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s leadership that we have come to appreciate is the openness albeit limited, that has come as a breath of fresh air after 2 decades of punitive control of the public sphere.

The arrests of the three individuals under the draconian law at a time when Malaysians have become more mature politically and less inclined to be baited by racial politics will no doubt further erode the legitimacy of and support for the ruling party, perhaps irrevocably.

Of no less import will be the repercussions to Malaysia’s reputation internationally, that time and again the ruling party resorts to an unjust and antiquated piece of legislation to silence dissent in order to sustain her cling to power.

It is clear to all that the arrests of MP Theresa Kok and journalist Tan Hoon Cheng are COMPLETELY WITHOUT justification.

Tan was merely doing her job as a journalist and UMNO has undertaken the appropriate measures, including an apology from its deputy president.

In the “Puchong Azan Issue”, MP Theresa Kok was arrested over what is clearly a FALSE allegation.

We urge the authorities to immediately release the two and bring to book those responsible for fomenting racial and religious hatred.

It cannot be completely denied that Raja Petra Kamarudin in his writings and those who contribute to his blog have expressed views that many Muslims consider as denigrating the prophet and the religion of Islam.

However we believe this can be countered by sound arguments based on well accepted teachings and sources of Islam.

In the extreme, the authorities may take him to the Syariah court. The use of the ISA is excessive, inhumane and runs counter to Islam’s principles of justice.

In this blessed month of Ramadhan, we urge the authorities to act justly in carrying out their responsibility of maintaining the peace and security of the country.

We also urge everyone in the public sphere to exercise restraint and wisdom in discussing issues of race and religion.

Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim
- The Lone Voice of Decency in the Politically Insane UMNO-Led Government: Threatens to Quit over ISA

Excerpts: Read here for more in Malaysiakini

De facto Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim today threatened to resign if the government continues to use the Internal Security Act, which allows detention without trial, against political dissidents.

Zaid Ibrahim also called for the immediate release of DAP MP Teresa Kok and controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin who were arrested under the tough security law last Friday.

Zaid Ibrahim said:

".... We have a government that commits to laws and reforms, we can't be using old-style politics or resort to creating fear. We have laws and they (the detainees) should be charged in court.

I'll try to meet with Prime Minister (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) this week to convey to him my position.

If (he considers) my position untenable, I will leave .

ISA should only be used to curb terrorism, which was the reason why it was first enacted. The problem with the ISA now is that it is used against certain people, it is a very unjust law.

I am very sad that people like Teresa, whom I know personally, can be seen as a threat.

I can't see how a journalist doing her duty, or even Raja Petra, can be seen as a national threat.

If their statements upset certain people, let the police investigate.
I don't want to make it difficult for him (Abdullah).

If my views are inconsistent or unsuitable (to that of the cabinet's), I can leave the government.

It (the crackdown) is a setback (on my work).

The government wanted to change certain things, otherwise they don't need me (to be in the cabinet)."

The minister conceded that his views on certain matters do not go down well with his cabinet colleagues.

Tun Dr. Mahathir, You Could've Been a Respectable Elder Statesman, But You CHOSE to be a Pathetic, Divisive and Whinging Old Man

Read here article by JD Lovrenciear in Malaysiakini

by

JD Lovrenciear

Our former prime minister (Tun Dr. Mahathir) could have wisely taken the route of a retired elderly.

But he is fast losing the wisdom that could have been the hallmark of any senior statesman.

Since his retirement from politics after having held the helm for over two decades, Dr Mahathir has only ADDED to the sordid confusion and dereliction of Malaysian politics.

First, he attacks and disowns the very man he appointed to succeed him. Then he rebounds with wanting to see Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak take on the leadership of the nation only to soon change his mind again.

Then he walks out of Umno, the very party that he claimed to have fought tooth and nail to protect and nourish for over two decades.

And most recently, he wowed that he would abandon the very nation that gave him a rare opportunity of trust to lead for over two decades. He announced unashamedly that he would migrate if his former nemesis rises to lead the nation. How unpatriotic.

And now, in the midst of the Umno party war, he wants to come back.

Dear Dr Mahathir,

All your actions and words are not going down well for the nation. It also earns us sheer embarrassment in the global arena. And locally, it fuels much confusion, disharmony and strife.

You are not in any way helping the nation to forge ahead.

Instead, YOU are pitting man against man and race against race.

As a retired leader, you could have held your self esteem high and continued to be a watershed in the nation's political trials and tribulations leading to maturity and forward movement.

You COULD HAVE BEEN respected SENIOR LEADER who would be the BEST person to provide wisdom that is certainly much needed in these troubling times.

You could have gone on to be the beacon for much of the developing world given the principles you claimed to have championed in the past.
But unfortunately, today we witness the antics of a man to the contrary.

Indeed you have ADDED an embarrassing and painful chapter to the troubled history of Malaysia. And that is most aching to the hearts of the rakyat.

It is therefore best for you, the rakyat, the party, and nation that YOU maintain SIGNIFICANT SILENCE.

Such Crap! Blaming the Journalist for Reporting the Truth

What An Idiot !!

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said the arrest of journalist Tan Hoon Cheng under the Internal Security Act was made BECAUSE:

Oops!! So, my dear Malaysians, it was NOT that RACIST Ahmad Ismail who started the whole thing, but the journalist who reported it!! And to make an arrest under ISA in order for the police to TALK to the journalist on her report?

Does Syed Hamid Albar, an overseas-trained lawyer and an UMNO-BN Cabinet Minister, think we Malaysians are a bunch of stupid dumb fools to swallow such nonsensical logic?

The whole thing was started by her, (so) it was best that we talked to her,”

Asked to elaborate, Syed Hamid Albar said Tan’s article had caused “the polemic and fear” thus warranting investigations by the police.

Excerpts of the 18-minute press conference: (reported in Malaysiakini)

Q: Is Ahmad Ismail above the law?

Syed Hamid:
He has been punished so far as the party (ie UMNO, not Government) as concerned. At the same time there is a report against Ahmad Ismail and we are investigating it. I don’t think we treat politicians differently. We have taken action. That politician has been suspended three years by the party. He lose all his position. At the same time there is a report of sedition.

Q. Why arrest the reporter when you can call her up for questioning?

Syed Hamid:
Whatever action that we take, there will be questions asked. The whole thing was started by her, it is best that we talk to her. If she is a threat, she would be brought in under Section 73 for 60 days. She would be held. When we have questioned her and we are satisfied with her answers, we just release her. I don’t think we are being unfair nor have we mistreated her.

Q. Why couldn’t the police just ask her to come in for questioning?

Syed Hamid:
When the police feel it is best to bring the person in under the ISA, they will do so.

That is why it is not an exercise on the part of the minister to hold the person under Section 8 which is two years (detention) straight away. The police feel that they should handle it and avoid any misunderstanding.

Q. Do you as a minister feel that the ISA arrests were justified?

Syed Hamid:
I’m a minister and politician. If I start to interfere, people will say I have a political motive. I cannot interfere with the police.

Police's Reason for Arresting Teresa Kok

According to a notice by Special Branch police, Selangor Govt Senior Exco Member Teresa Kok was arrested under the Internal Security Act yesterday evening for allegedly causing tension and conflict among races.

The notice stated that Kok, 43, had acted in a way which threatened national security, which warranted arrest under Section 73(1) of the ISA.

It added that the Seputeh member of parliament had become a national threat by being involved in "activities which can cause tension and conflict among races and religion".

(Note: In the 2008 General Elections, Teresa Kok retained her Parliamentary seat of Seputeh in Kuala Lumpur with a majority of 36,492, the LARGEST majority in any constituency in these elections)

We ask the Special Branch Police and the Home Minister,

Why weren't Ahmad Ismail, Khir Toyo and the editor-in-chief of Utusan Malaysia arrested under ISA for the same reason, " involved in activities causing tension and conflict among races and religion and acted in a way which threatened national security?"
