Former MIC vice-president Datuk S.S. Subramaniam has today joined PKR, making him the most senior MIC leader to defect to the opposition.

He was also former parliamentary secretary for Ministry of Trade and Industry.

His defection to PKR came exactly a week after former health minister and prominent MCA leader Chua Jui Meng threw his lot with the opposition party. In June 2009, it was UMNO's Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, a former Law Minister in Abdullah Badawi's Cabinet who joined PKR.

SS Subramaniam also announced that 10 MIC branches in Petaling Jaya would fold and join PKR en masse and would result in a mass defection of about 1,700 MIC members to PKR.

His brother SS Sitaram, who has been a MIC branch leader in Petaling Jaya Selatan, will also be joining PKR.

Earlier at the function, MIC branch leader of Pekan Meru, AR Palaya, told the crowd that he was dissolving his branch.
