"Tenaga Nasional Berhad, which announced RECORD 3rd quarter profits (175%) recently.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd's (TNB) net profit for its third quarter ended May 31 soared 175%, versus a year earlier, on higher tariff rates and improved margins.

It also benefited from a stronger ringgit, which brought down payments of foreign currency debt of the utility company.

For the three months in review, TNB posted earnings of RM1.09bil on revenue of RM5.91bil. That compares with a net profit of RM395mil on a turnover of RM5.02bil in the year-earlier quarter.

The company declared a second interim dividend of 10 sen a share, less tax, payable at a date to be announced later. " Read here for more

Kasmuri Jasman, 44, a tile factory worker at Malaysian Mosaic , died with his wife, Sufiah Abdul Karim, 41 and three children, Hishamuddin, 13, Nizammuddin 9, and daughter Nurul Macella, 8.

Another daughter, Nurul Farhana, 15, managed to escape from the burning house and so were the occupants of the adjoining house, senior citizens identified as Azila and Saiman, and a child.

Their house at Kampung Tengah near Kluang, Johore, was burnt down after it caught fire from burning candles.

Kasmuri had delayed settling the home electricity bills as he needed the money for his three other children who were studying at the local universities.

Kasmuri's children studying at the universities are Salahuddin, in his 20s, who is at Kolej Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (Kuittho), Faizah Nor, also in her 20s, at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Juliana, 19, a matriculation student at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

Kasmuri's neighbour, Jamliah Othman, told reporters:

"The Kasmuri family had been using candles to lit their home for the past five nights after Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) cut the electricity supply to their house when they did not pay the bill".
Jamliah Othman, in her 60s, said Kasmuri's wife, Sufiah Abdul Karim, told her about it a few days ago.

Fearing the danger candles posed to the family, Jamliah said she called the Kluang Fire and Rescue station three days ago to inform the matter.

She believed that strong winds early today had caused the candle to fall while the family was asleep and engulfed the semi-detached wooden house.

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department said the department was investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, another neighbour, Zainita Ali, 27, said the three children could have escaped the fiery death had they not returned into the burning house to help their parents.

"Hishammuddin, Izamuddin and Nurul Macella were already at the front door, but they went into the burning house again after seeing their parents collapsed," she added.

Nurul Farhana, a Form Three student Sekolah Menengah Sultan Abdul Jalil is still in a trauma.

Meanwhile, Kasmuri's brother-in-law, Sudirman Abdul Karim, 45, who was met at the Kluang Hospital mortuary, said the victims would be buried at the Belahan Tampuk Muslim cemetery in Rengit, Batu Pahat later today.

  • ".... Well it gets even more disgusting and nauseating to read that while the wolves fight over the bloody carcass, some people have to pay the ultimate price to try and secure their survival and their future.

It seems Kasmuri made about RM1,800 a month, which evidently was not enough to see his family through.

RM900 minimum wage? You know what the government thinks of that.

What’s worse is that these people had to struggle and die in this way, while the government thinks nothing of spending millions, even billions, on things that are of dubious benefit to the rakyat at large.

    What was that again: “
We are not in the business of cheating the people“?

It breaks my heart. It really does .

    "We followed procedure".

We've read the tragic story of the poor in the papers: factory worker Kasmuri Jasman, his wife and three kids aged between 8 and 13 died in a pre-dawn fire in Kluang, Johor.

The fire was believed to have been caused by candlelight. The family had to resort to candles after Tenaga Nasional Berhad, which announced record 3rd quarter profits recently, had cut the electricity supply to their home.

Kasmuri could not afford to pay his electricity bills and that caused him his so dearly.
    This morning TNB issued a
press statement to say that it had given sufficient notice to Kasmuri before disconnecting his electricity supply.

I am not blaming TNB for the tragedy. Nobody should blame the TNB for the deaths. But you get the feeling of great injustice all the same.

Kasmuri was not a rich man. I can only hope that TNB would care for Kasmuri's other kids and find the heart to be more caring in future. A more understanding TNB may save lives.

Tony Pua, the economic adviser to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng filed a police report against Kelab Penyokong Maya Umno (KPMU) over an article titled Riwayat Raja Petra II posted on its website with the Damansara police station yesterday.

The content of the article had insulted Christians and Christianity.

The police report named Siddiq Akmal Ismail as the editor of the website.
“Police must arrest the writer, editor, publisher and the owner of the website and investigate them under the Sedition Act,” he told a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.

In the report, Puah said the writer had accused Christians of worshipping a “fake and non-existent” god. The article also described Christians as “drunkards who are intent on wiping out the Malay community and that they are wild and deviant.”

“The article is published with the intention to insult Christians and to create anger and racial tension,” said Puah.

“If investigations against Raja Petra (Kamarudin), who allegedly committed the same crime by insulting Islam and the King, we hope the police will act equally fast in investigating this matter,” he added.

  • ".... They INSULT me by calling me a CHRISTIAN.

That means being a Christian is the most insulting thing they can think of.

And if a Chinese Buddhist or Indian Hindu was to insult someone by calling that person a Muslim (meaning that being a Muslim is the most insulting thing on the face of this earth) there would be bloodshed on the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

You are not insulting me by calling me a Christian. I do not mind one bit being called a Christian.

But to ‘insult’ me by calling me a Christian is to insult all Christians because when you ‘insult’ me by calling me a Christian you are insinuating that being a Christian is worse than being a swindler, someone who runs away to Thailand to secretly marry the Sultan’s daughter, gay, sex pervert who shags animals, male prostitute, gambler, mother-fxxxer, etc.

...be a bit more sensitive to the feelings of Christians. By all means engage Malaysia Today. But please spare the Christians.

.... you will not score any points by insulting Christians and insinuating that being a Christian is such a terrible thing.

Umno alone cannot form the government. Umno holds less than half the 222 parliamentary seats. Furthermore, the 100 or so seats that Umno holds are not in 97% Malay-majority constituencies. Umno, therefore, needs the support of the Christians as well. But if the Christians were to find out that the Kelab Penyokong Maya Umno considers that being a Christian is a great curse, then the Christians might abandon Umno and kick Umno out of office.

If I really am a Christian, I would be greatly upset that the Kelab Penyokong Maya Umno considers being a Christian as something terrible. But then I am not a Christian. This is about being sensitive to the feelings of the Christians.

I hope, as a gesture of good faith, Kelab Penyokong Maya Umno will publish an apology to all Christians (and even if you don’t mean it pretend you do just to make sure that Umno does not lose the support of the Christians come the next election).

    My Fellow Malaysians,

More than five million of our citizens have yet to register to vote.

Most of these citizens were BORN in the 1970s and 1980s.

That is a shame, although it is consistent with the trend in most democratic countries where citizens have become disillusioned with politicians and politics.

Before we can talk about the issues facing our country, we must first register as a voter or check whether we are still on the electoral rolls and get those family members, relatives and friends to do the same.

On one fine subuh, Imam Badawi will receive his “ilham” to go for snap elections.

In order not to be caught by surprise, REGISTER NOW . Be prepared!

To check if you are registered voter, please go to
    http://www.spr.gov.my/
and key in your NRIC/My-Kad number to find out.

Also check whether your name is correct.

We must register and vote. This is our FIRST duty as citizens.

It is easy to register. Go the Post Office nearest you, fill in the form, include your IC and other details.

Re-check later as you could be sent to Timbuktu to vote by mistake!!

Finally, make sure you turn up on Polling Day to vote with your clear conscience.

Make sure whoever you choose as your representative will work hard and will be accountable for their actions.

There is NO time for cynicism, disillusionment and disenchantment with the politics as usual, and politicians in our country.

Collectively, we can make a difference.

I appeal to you, my fellow Malaysians. Please do not forfiet this fundamental right.

    Make your vote count.

Together we can make Malaysia a better and more united and democratic country.

Raja Petra Challenged Internal Security Deputy Minister Johari Baharum: "Say Malaysia-Today Was NOT Telling the Truth"

From Malaysia-Today: Read here article by Raja Petra Kamarudin

    Excerpts: Read here for more

"... I challenge the Deputy Minister of Internal Security to categorically state that what Malaysia Today says is NOT true.

If Johari Baharum keeps mum, then Malaysia Today will now ACCUSE him of also being on the payroll of the Chinese organised crime syndicate.

Well, what is it going to be Jo (Johari Baharum) ?

I suppose you can always detain me and send me to Kamunting for two years instead but this will just prove Malaysia Today is right.

Malaysia Today previously wrote in this same column, please see the links below:

    1.
Malaysia’s organised crime syndicate: all roads lead to Putrajaya

    2.
The roaches are scurrying and the rats are hurrying

    3.
    Please, IGP, explain this!

    4.
The latest update on Infohub Sdn Bhd

    5.
    The walls come crumbling down

The five reports above reveal in great detail the links those who walk in the corridors of power have with the Chinese organised crime syndicate.

The IGP, however, DENIES any wrongdoing. He DENIES he is protecting the Chinese organised crime syndicate or that he has any links with it whatsoever.

Okay, then what are the following Statutory Declarations all about then?

The following six Affidavits have been handed to the Ministry of Internal Security:
    (click links below to read)

    1.
    ASP Hong Kin Hock (G/10990)

    2.
ASP Mior Fahim Bin Ahmad (K/P Polis No: G/13237)

    3.
ASP Md. Yusof Bin Ahmad (K/P Polis No: G/10608)

    4.
Pemangku Sarjan Mejar Manimaran a/l Palaniappan (K/P Polis No: D/94894)

    5.
Detektif Sarjan Raja Kumar (K/P Polis No: D/104700)

    6.
Sarjan Mohd. Yasin Bin Malik (K/P Polis No: RF/89379)

Thus far, six police officers have come forward to sign Affidavits testifying to the fact that the IGP is protecting the Chinese organised crime syndicate and the story they have to tell does not paint a pretty picture at all.

The IGP said that he is being framed by his own men.

If he is LYING that is bad. (This is) because he would then be in the same league as Umno’s much-disgraced Information Chief.

But if what he says is TRUE , then that is equally bad. This demonstrates that the IGP has lost control of the police force. Is the police force a force by itself?

Is this why officers from the special unit are moonlighting as assassins for those who wish to dispose of pesky foreign lovers?

The Murder of the Mongolian Woman

And it appears, according to the court testimony during the ongoing murder trial of Razak Baginda and his two attack dogs, weapons and ammunition can be taken in and out of the armoury without any security checks. In fact, the court was told, the officers can even take home the unused bullets and other dangerous stuff.

It seems the two police officers currently on trial for murder NEVER revealed the location where Altantuya was disposed.

The police knew EXACTLY where the place was in spite of its extremely hidden location and which is off the beaten track.

How did they know? Is it because that location is ‘gazetted’ as a disposal site?

Furthermore, I was told, when the forensic people took away Altantuya’s remains, they discovered that the remains were not of Altantuya alone, but of NINE different people.

Now Razak’s Affidavit that he filed during his bail application in front of Justice Segara makes sense. According to Razak, the inspector told him he had already killed six people before.

Were these six amongst the remains of that nine? This certainly creates the perception that the police are out of control.

The IGP and the Crime Syndicate

Then, now, the story about the links between the police and the Chinese underworld emerges to add to the already troubling image of the police force.

And, according to the IGP, these stories are from people who wish to frame him and bring about his downfall.

  • Let us assume that he is RIGHT, in that they are trying to frame him.

  • Let us agree that the police, in particular the IGP, do NOT have any links with the Chinese organised crime syndicate and is NOT offering it protection.

  • (Questions):

    1. Then why have the officers who arrested the Chinese underworld boss of bosses landed in hot soup?

    2. Why, instead of the Chinese underworld bosses, have the police who arrested him been interrogated and are being made to face disciplinary action?
The Royal Malaysian Police is now split into two camps.

  • On the one side is the Commercial Crime Division which made its move on the Chinese organised crime syndicate on the instructions of the Deputy Minister of Internal Security.

  • On the other side is the Criminal Investigation Division that appears to be the protector of the Chinese organised crime syndicate.

  • One wants to get rid of the Chinese organised crime syndicate and the other wants to get rid of the police officers who wish to get rid of the Chinese organised crime syndicate.

And at the pinacle of this very weird pyramid is the Minister of Internal Security.

This is what The Star reported on 5 August 2007 in its story: ‘Untouchable’ crime kingpin arrested in Johor Baru. It is learnt that the crime lord, described as the head of one of the most powerful syndicates in the country, was arrested under a directive from the Internal Security Ministry.

    Notice that:

    1. it was the Commercial Crime Division that made the arrest and NOT the Criminal Investigation Division.

    2. it was the Internal Security Ministry and NOT the IGP that ordered the arrest.

If the IGP has really been framed and is not behind the Chinese organised crime syndicate, then HE should have been the one ordering the arrest, instead of the one punishing the police officers who made the arrest.

And the Internal Security Ministry would NOT have had to step in and do his job for him.

Anyway, let us see whether the IGP releases Tengku instead of sending him for two years detention. If Tengku is a Shia Muslim rest assured he would be sent up for two years.

Malaysia Today has two more Affidavits which are not included in those six above and which have thus far not been published yet. These are Affidavits by two underworld operators. And what they say in their Statutory Declarations is no different from what the six police officers above said.

But they want to be guaranteed protection before they will allow me to release them.

They want me to hand their Affidavits to the Rulers and to be given an assurance they will not be assassinated once I reveal their Affidavits.

Tuanku, Tuanku sekelian, the ball is now at your feet. Give the word and I will hand them to you.

In the meantime, while we wait for the Rulers to respond, have a look at the following testimony from another senior police officer who at the moment would like to remain anonymous
(I have not edited it but have reproduced it as per his testimony):

In the earlier detention of the three Chinamen -- Chai Ngew, Tan Lee Poey and Chin Yew Fah of Tengku’s syndicate -- the IGP instructed Dato Khalid, Deputy Director CID I, to release them. Khalid did so by stating the reason for release as “they have repented (telah insaf)”. IGP was unhappy with their initial detention and alleged that they were victimised/framed by the officers who obtained intelligence from the ‘sources’. This is startling for an incumbent IGP to accuse his own officers.

One week after their detention, they were found to be again running illegal gambling. How could they have been victimised or telah insaf if they were arrested for the very reason they were initially put under detention. KKDN then lodged a BPR report against IGP for the release without KKDN’s approval as KKDN had information that IGP was working with syndicate leading to the allegation of the RM2 million bribe. They have since run away to avoid revelation of IGP’s involvement.

The BPR investigation was then launched to clear IGP’s name. The BPR team interrogated Insp. Nordin Bin Ahmad and Detective L/Kpl. Wong Boon Whye, the recording officers of the the chinamen’s case. They were detained and subjected to a tough, marathon interrogation from 5pm to mid-day the following (baling file, hentak meja, etc., to intimidate these officers). The BPR was biased and accused them of fabricating evidence. BPR called and gave away the identity of the sources such that the sources became frightened that their ‘secret’ statements are now known to Tengku’s syndicate.

Tengku’s syndicate then brought these sources to IGP’s house and threatened them such that they denied giving the intelligence statements. They also intimidated the sources to state that the signatures in the intelligence statements that had given were not their signatures. Tengku’s syndicate also lodged a confidential report (Repot Sulit) in Muar which is kept by OCPD Muar alleging that Dato Khalid received RM20 million for ‘fixing’ Tengku. That was how IGP silenced Dato Khalid by threatening him that there is a case against him if he does not co-operate.

It is to be noted that in the BPR investigation no statements were recorded from Dato Khalid or from DSP Hedzir. IGP was also not served with a section 32 Notice to declare his assets as pointed out by Lim Kit Siang. A-G mentioned that it was not IGP who released the three but it was Dato Khalid. Of course, but who directed Dato Khalid?

It is also to be noted that IGP has aligned his cronies named by Malaysia Today earlier into very powerful positions -- e.g. DSP Chew Kam Soon is now in Tatatertib. DSP Chew was transferred to Sabah by previous IGP Tan Sri Bakri because he was suspected of manipulating commercial crime cases. But under present IGP he flourishes. Naturally all officers are now too afraid to speak up.

After IGP was cleared by A-G, Tengku resurfaced in Johor. C/Insp Mohd Shah Kamaruddin and his men from Commercial Crime got wind of this and arrested him on Thursday 2/8/2007 and a detention was made under the Restricted Resident Act by order of the Deputy Home Minister. IGP’s men coached Tengku’s son to lodge a police report stating that Tengku was framed (same story given earlier by IGP) and quoted Section 193 and Section 211 of the Penal Code.

That was the fait accompli for Christopher Wan, Director CID, to direct Supt Gan from CID Johor to open investigation against C/Insp Mohd Shah and the other arresting officers. All these arresting officers now have to give their statements and are made the subject of an internal investigation. What is so important about Tengku that a Supt. is assigned to be his ‘saviour’ by making the hunter now become the hunted?

This has never happened before especially since the arrest and detention of Tengku was a directive of the Deputy Home Minister. A dissatisfied detainee would have filed a claim for habeas corpus. It is unheard for an incumbent IGP to lend support to such actions by directing and investigation against the arresting officers. Yet, these officers are exposed to such threats from the enemy within.

Must Read: Raja Nazrin's Keynote Address at the "Malaysian Student Leaders Summit 2007"

Read here the full text of Raja Nazrin' Keynote Address in English or read below (after the report in Bahasa from Bernama)

      From Bernama: Read here

Text: Keynote Address by the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, at the
First Annual Student Leaders Summit 2007 -- "Celebrating 50 Years of Nationhood" -- on Aug 5, 2007, at Nikko Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

I am delighted to be here this morning to deliver the keynote address at this Summit, dedicated as it is to Youth. All of you in this room are the creme de la creme of the young generation -- those fortunate enough and intelligent enough to benefit from the best education. You are the future leaders of this nation.

This morning, I want to talk to you about the challenges and prospects for nation-building. Nation-building refers to the structuring of a country, with the help of state power, to ensure a strong national identity that is viable in the long run. It is predicated on national unity and is a topic of utmost importance to all of us, not least the younger generation.

Fifty years of the national relay race has been run. Soon the baton will be handed to those of you who will run the next lap. The Malaysia familiar to most, if not all, of you is the modern prosperous nation with its increasingly urban population and robust middle class; not the poor and predominantly agricultural society of 50 years ago.

When Malaysia gained independence, we were on a par with countries like Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Ghana, Morocco and Senegal in terms of per capita income. Today we have far surpassed these countries in economic growth and human development.

However, it is important to be aware that this was a far-fetched vision 50 years ago. The first Merdeka generation, almost overnight, found themselves tasked with an onerous job when Malaysia gained independence. The country was born against the backdrop of a virulent communist insurgency. Poverty was widespread, particularly in the rural areas. There was very little sense of unity and national identity. The states that made up the federation were only loosely integrated. M
any people regarded themselves primarily as natives of their state rather than as nationals of Malaya. The enlargement of Malaya into Malaysia in 1963 was vigorously opposed by our neighbours, leading to confrontation with Indonesia. After the traumatic events of 1969, many predicted the imminent disintegration of Malaysian society.

That we have been able to forge a successful nation without resorting to the rule of the gun makes us something of an oddity in a region of coups, civil strife and people power.

This has been due in large part to wise leadership, the innate good sense of the Malaysian people -- and a bit of luck. Today, the nine Sultanates, two Straits Settlements and the two states in Borneo have united in a tangible way despite historical separation and physical distance. Development policies and communication channels have managed to fuse together the myriad religions and ethnic groups and forged a sense of belonging and shared destiny.

Malaysia is one of the very few countries with a diverse mix of race and religion that have been able to do this. Our peace momentum is also demonstrated on the international arena. Malaysia played a seminal role in the creation Asean and its enlargement from six members to 10, then Asean plus 3. It still has a lead role in the first moves towards a regional architecture, particularly the East Asian Summit
Our group culture is very distinct from the individualism of the west. We participate actively in one another's cultural and lifestyle choices.

We celebrate festivities together, we learn and speak one another's languages, we wear each other's traditional costumes, we appreciate different arts and types of music. A chat over teh tarik is an example of a typically Malaysian pastime that all races and ages take delight in.

However, every coin has two sides. Let us not be naive in thinking it is all a rosy picture.

There is still much room for improvement.

Interaction between the ethnic groups, to the extent that it exists, remains more of an urban phenomenon. In recent years, ethnic identities appear to have become more explicit. In some instances, what divides us has become more emphasised than what unites us.

When the New Economic Policy (NEP) was established, it was to address the problem of economic function being identified along the lines of ethnicity, and the problem of widespread poverty. All quarters of society came to an agreement that in order for nation-building to proceed, certain sacrifices had to be made to help the underperforming groups.

But it was NOT a case where one party was to benefit at another's expense.

Distribution was to take place within the context of a growing economy. It was meant to be a situation of give-and-take that would result in economic growth shared by ALL segments of society.

Today, the give-and-take attitude seems to have dissipated.
Malaysians are exhibiting signs of polarisation along ethnic and religious lines.

Some groups bear grudges against what is perceived as preferential treatment. Others regard preferential treatment as an indisputable entitlement.

Moreover, the impasse at the global level between Islam and non-Islam affects even a moderate country like Malaysia. Matters of faith are topics of immense controversy. They provoke overzealousness and coercive action, and drive Malaysians further and further away from each other. Our diversity was meant to be our unique asset.

The Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara institutionalised living together in peaceful, harmonious co-existence.

Yet years after Merdeka, we are still grappling with concerns about unity.

So what are the challenges to nation-building that we need to face head on?

To me, the challenges are many, but the one that stands out is the need to balance change with continuity. The current phase of nation-building should be in tune with the temper of the times to reflect the new realities of the modern world. We are facing a globalised environment where excellence and meritocracy are the rule of the game.

Opportunities in the global world reward those with ability, regardless of colour or creed. A multi-ethnic country like ours has to be especially watchful.

In the absence of a strong national identity, we are prone to polarisation and competition along ethno-religious lines. Therefore, a most expert balancing act is required to maintain socio-political stability while not losing out on global competitiveness.

As I have said elsewhere, to ensure sustained success at nation-building, Malaysians of all races, religions, and geographic locations need to believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that they have a place under the Malaysian sun.

Only when each citizen believes that he or she has a common home, is presented common opportunities, given due recognition and is working towards a common destiny, will he or she make the sacrifices needed for the long haul.

Managing change is not easy and nation-building does not occur naturally in any society, let alone a pluralistic one.

Allow me to suggest three essentials for effective and sustained nation-building.

      1. The first is the Rule of Law and the inviolability of the Constitution.

The Constitution is the supreme law of the country which guarantees fundamental liberties to every citizen. A cleverly crafted document, it clearly provides for adequate checks and balances against excesses through the separation of powers between the executive, legislative and judicial branches -- with each protected from encroachment by the other.

It has often been said that many a misunderstanding may be avoided if the principles embodied in the constitution are adhered to strictly.

Upholding the Rule of Law is paramount. In this connection, I can do no better than to quote the words of Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, a leading jurist, when she delivered the Sultan Azlan Shah Law Lecture in Kuala Lumpur last month:

"Law is the bedrock of a nation; it tells us who we are, what we value. It regulates our human relationships one to the other and our relationships as citizens with the state. Law is cultural. It comes out of the deep wellsprings of history and experience within a country...

"The rule of law is one of the tools we use in our stumbling progress towards civilising the human condition: a structure of law, with proper methods and independent judges, before whom even a government must be answerable. It is the only restraint upon the tendency of power to debase its holders. As we know, power is delighful and absolute power is absolutely delighfful.

"We must be the protectors of those who are vulnerable to abuse. We have to stand up and be counted. We have to protect the things that make our nations great..."

      2. The second element necessary in nation-building is economic and social justice for ALL .

All groups in society, regardless of ethnic group, religion or gender, must participate in making decisions that affect their lives and livelihood.

They must have a voice and a place in all sectors.

They must carry equal responsibilities in making society work. The people we work and play with, the friendships we make, must never be constrained by ethnicity.

Preconceptions, parochialism and chauvinism can be eradicated if we interact actively with others of a different ethnic group or religion -- even if it is just one teacher, one man or one schoolmate. In many areas, this is absent and it must change.

      3. The third requisite to nation-building is good governance and a thriving civil society.

Institutions of governance must demonstrate and generate norms and behaviour that are fundamentally efficient, productive and just. Only those who are capable, responsible and scrupulously honest should be allowed to serve in positions of leadership. Those who are inefficient, incompetent and, most importantly, corrupt should be held in absolute contempt. There must also be concrete anti-corruption measures and management practices based on efficiency, transparency and accountability.

It is also very important that we have leaders who are earnest in maintaining unity, never resorting to religious or ethnic posturing to further their political careers at the expense of peace and security. Should they fail in this respect, they must be held accountable and answerable before the law.

What can you do to help promote national unity?

I'm going to assume you are still at an age when you are still idealistic -- that you wish to improve the human condition. That you are patriotic. That you believe in friendship and peace. That you would rather build than destroy. You are in the best position to tenaciously forge this nation.

Let me suggest a few ways how you can contribute towards Malaysia's continued success at nation-building.

      1. First, get a copy of the Federal Constitution and familiarise yourselves with it. The Constitution is the supreme law of the land. It guarantees the rights of every Malaysian. As such, the integrity of that document must be protected.

      2. Second, study the nation's history, particularly the lives and works of past leaders who have sacrificed so much for this country. One such leader is Tun Dr Ismail. He was an exemplary Malaysian. He envisaged a Malaysia for all without colour lines, without ethnic borders and without any one group feeling a sense of inferiority. He recognised the importance of open-mindedness in addressing day-to-day issues and problems; the importance of listening and learning from others, particularly from those who are more advanced. He strongly believed in the principle of life-long learning, visiting other lands and adopting best practices without losing our core values and our identity as a nation. He had the interest of the nation at heart and went beyond the call of duty in the service of his nation. He put his country above himself and served till the very last day of his life. The leadership, sincerity, sacrifices and integrity of Tun Dr Ismail and other leaders of his generation should serve to inspire the next generation of leaders.

      3. Third, you must take personal ownership over the wellbeing of the country. Do not succumb to indifference and apathy. Hold on to your ideals. Do not give way to cynicism and opportunism. Believe that you can make a difference. Channel your energies in a constructive manner to bring about positive changes around you.

      4. Fourth, participate actively in community service that is geared towards promoting interaction between communities. Volunteer your spare time and energy to work with Malaysians from other walks of life and ethnic groups.

      5. Fifth, be prepared to serve your country to the best of your ability. All of you represent the valuable future human capital this country needs. The outside world knows the value of our best brains, which is why they set out to attract our people, creating a brain drain for us. Do not exacerbate the problem of the brain drain. Also, do not be averse to building a career in public service. I believe all of us have some innate desire to serve. Always think nation first.

More than anything, Malaysia needs a future generation of leaders with unquestionable integrity. In countries where specialised expertise and technical know-how are lacking, they can be imported from elsewhere.

But integrity, by definition, is something that cannot be bought or hired. You and the quality of leadership you provide are the key to continued peace and harmony in Malaysia. A

t a time when new powers like China and India are rising, we cannot afford to lose our harmony dividend. It is the anchor of this nation.

The Merdeka generation after a tough climb managed to make it to base camp. The summit lies ahead and I can guarantee you that it will be an arduous climb. But it can also be exhilarating. It will need climbers who are skilled, courageous, confident and above all, steadfast.

To face the challenges ahead, you need a bedrock faith in what you and our country stand for. I wish all of you the very best in your future.

All is Really NOT Well in the Attorney-General's Office and the Judiciary

Read here in The Malaysian Bar Council's website for more

      1. Top Prosecutors Seek Early Retirement

Two of Malaysia's most senior criminal prosecutors, namely Datuk Yusof Zainal Abiden and Mr Sallehuddin Saidin, are seeking optional retirement.

Datuk Yusof, 52, is the Chief of criminal prosecution at the Attorney-General's Chambers and Mr Sallehuddin, his 44-year-old Deputy, holds the post of chief of the classified cases unit.

Several lawyers say the move by Datuk Yusof and Mr Sallehuddin to take optional retirement appears to be motivated by underlying frustration. 'Taking optional retirement under these circumstances can be viewed as a sign of protest in the civil service,' said a senior KL constitutional lawyer, who is closely tracking developments.

Datuk Yusof and Mr Sallehuddin have yet to disclose why they intend to seek optional retirement.

But lawyers say the duo's planned exit from government service is linked to the handling of the ongoing high-profile trial for a Mongolian woman's murder, as well as widespread dissatisfaction over the goings-on within the A-G's Chambers.

Typically, lawyers stay with the A-G's Chambers for about 10 years before they move into the private sector, where financial returns are far more attractive.

Those who stay on in the civil service do so for two reasons. Some believe they have a shot at two of the most coveted positions in the Malaysian legal system - the posts of Attorney-General and Solicitor-General. Others stay on because of their ambitions to be

      2. Questions on the Judiciary

Questions are raised about the odd state of affairs where the country's top judge, Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim, also holds a second position, that of Chief Judge of Malaya.

Senior government sources said that candidates whom Tun Ahmad Fairuz nominated had been shot down by the Conference of Rulers, made up of the country's nine Sultans who have veto powers over key government appointments.
The Handling of the Mongolian Woman's Murder Case

Datuk Yusof Zainal Abiden and Mr Sallehuddin Saidin were principal players in preparing the government's case against three men charged with the gruesome murder of a 28-year-old Mongolian woman (Altantuya) last October. Mr Sallehuddin was originally slated to lead the prosecution in the case.

But Malaysia's Attorney-General, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, removed him from that role a day before the trial was initially set to begin on June 3.

The reason: Mr Sallehuddin had been seen playing badminton with the trial's judge, Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin.

Poor Handling by A-G Chambers of Other High-Profile Cases

The A-G's Chambers is under attack from judges and the public for its poor handling of several high-profile cases. They include:

    4. The acquittal of persons charged with the murder of nightclub guest relations officer Norita Samsudin in 2003 and the murder of a 14-year-old Chinese national in 2005.

    5. The A-G's Chambers was ticked off by the presiding judge in the corruption trial of Datuk Eric Chia, the former managing director of Malaysia's scandal-ridden steel company Perwaja Steel, who was also acquitted in the end.

    6. The A-G's prosecutors are getting flak for their conduct of the ongoing trial for the murder of the Mongolian woman, Ms Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Since the murder trial began on June 18, the prosecution's case has suffered a string of setbacks. The most glaring has been the prosecution's failure to adduce statements made by the accused relating to the crime.

Lawyers and opposition leaders have also questioned the prosecution's reluctance to pursue issues such as the apparent deletion of immigration records that would have removed any proof that Ms Altantuya had ever arrived in Malaysia.

    7. Govt Arrogantly REJECTS Malaysians' Call for a "New Malaysian Agenda"

From The Sun: Read HERE and HERE and HERE and HERE
      Quote:

"... WE (the Government) believe in OUR ways.

It is surprising that the group of 42, which is regarded as a group of highly educated people,
      CANNOT see the reality.

This is regrettable and the majority of the people in the country are offended ... a clever attempt to SPLIT the people.

To strengthen and improve national unity, the Government will accede to the people’s wishes and NOT the wishes of THIS group of 42. "

      -Zainuddin Maidin, Information Minister

      Background:

On 2nd August 2007, Mirzan Mahathir, the President of the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) of the Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS), officially launched the Merdeka Statement at the Eastin Hotel.

Mirzan Mahathir emphasised that the Merdeka Statement is a ‘living document’ and hopes that it will continue to be discussed, debated and improved upon.

Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Bernard Giluk Dompok, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department delivered the keynote address.

In his welcoming address, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Ramon V Navaratnam, Chairman of the Centre for Public Policy Studies, said the Merdeka Statement is a product of consultations between the CPPS and over 40 different organisations.

The official launch was followed by a brief overview of the Merdeka Statement’s eight strategic thrusts ("the citizen's wish list"):

      1. Strengthening National Unity,
      2. Enhancing International Competitiveness,
      3. Creating an Innovation Economy,
      4. Redressing Imbalances,
      5. Reinforcing Institutions,
      6. Reforming Education,
      7. Ensuring Quality of Life, and
      8. Improving Governance and Fighting Corruption

A lively panel discussion followed on the Merdeka Statement by Rev Dr Hermen Shastri representing the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism; Ms Ivy Josiah, Executive Director of the Women’s Aid Organisation; Mr Andrew Khoo representing the Malaysian Bar Council and Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim, Member of Parliament for Kota Bahru who was represented by Mr Dipendra Harshad Rai. Excerpts: Read here for more on Govt's response

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketInformation Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin said the Government would NOT accept the list as something that could be considered.

He said the citizens’ wish list issued does not represent the aspirations and wishes of the people nor does it reflect the reality.

The Information Minister told reporters, when asked to comment on the citizens’ wish list initiated by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli), in commemoration of Malaysia’s 50th anniversary of independence:

"THIS is NOT a citizens’ wish, but the wish of a handful of people.

      This is uncalled for.

They (42 NGOs) are an elite group which cannot be considered as representing the people and are not a group representing the feelings of the people below and they are removed from the heart and pulse of the people.

It is surprising that the group of 42, which is regarded as a group of highly educated people, cannot see the reality.

This is regrettable and the majority of the people in the country are offended ... a clever attempt to split the people.

WE (government) believe in OUR ways.

To strengthen and improve national unity, the government will accede to the people’s wishes and NOT the wishes of THIS group of 42. "

On National Unity (The First Agenda)

Zainuddin said the FIRST (agenda) pertaining to efforts to strengthen national unity was unacceptable because it was not based on the reality and the unity achieved since independence.

Zainuddin said the FIRT agenda in the list bordered on racism and did NOT take into consideration the values that have been accepted by Malaysians all this while.

      The FIRST agenda states:

" New sustained efforts are urgently needed to rebuild national unity as ethnic, linguistic and religious divides have deepened, causing genuine pain and hurt to many in the nation."
      According to Zainuddin,

"This is a statement that ignores the reality acknowledged by the world and the people as well as Malaysia’s achievments since independence.

One thing that is recognised by the world and has been a model (for the world) is the unity of the people and their ability to live in harmony."

Zainduddin described their (42 NGOs) approach as extremely chauvinistic.

He said said the principles of the country’s independence were based on a social contract that had been accepted all this while by the majority of the people and strengthened by the New Economic Policy which is aimed at balancing the economic status of the various races in the county.

He said most of the other agendas listed, including those on developing a world-class education system, enhancing international competitiveness and remaining engaged with the global economy, were not new to the government.

      According Zainuddin,
"All these had been in practice for a long time and Malaysia was more advanced than several other big nations in recognising the importance of a global economy and a free and open market."
What the People Want in the Merdeka Statement (Read here for more)

These are what the PEOPLE WANT ("the wish list) the Government to do:

      1. Strengthen national unity.

        New sustained efforts are urgently needed to rebuild the national unity as ethnic, linguistic and religious divides have deepened, causing pain and hurt to many in the nation;

      2. Enhance international competitiveness.

        The country must remain engaged with global economy, rapidly and continually adapting to maintain competitiveness by adopting international best practices;

      3. Create an innovation economy.

        An innovation policy should be developed as part of existing plans and policies within trade and services industries;

      4. Redress imbalances.

        Imbalances -- poverty, intra-ethnic and inter-gender income inequalities -- need to be redressed with newer strategies and more vigorous effort;

      5. Reinforce the institutions of the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.

        The government needs to further strengthen the key institutions and ensure their independence in reflecting values of good governance;

      6. Reform education

        Radical change of mindset is needed to bring about a paradigm shift in rethinking education, in developing a world-class Malaysian education system;

      7. Ensure quality of life

The government needs to ensure the people's quality of life can be improved through sustainable development initiatives; and

      8. Improve governance, fight corruption.

The principles of transparency, integrity, accountability and responsibility must be strictly upheld and enforced in all sectors of society.

Umno Youth has labelled Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim – who was once head of the (UMNO Youth) movement – a TRAITOR to the Malay cause.

In making the declaration, Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaludin said: “The (coming) general elections is not about politics
but the future of the Malays.”

“Anwar is a puppet of the United States and the Jews, thus he must be hounded until there is no more place for him to run to,” he told a state Umno Youth gathering on Wednesday night.

Among the 5,000 people present were the wing’s former chief Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Deputy Information Minister, and Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

Khairy said the movement was angered by Anwar’s persistence in wanting to do away with the New Economic Policy, a cause close to the hearts of the Malays.

“He wanted to abolish it simply because he wanted to win the support of the non-Malays,” he said.

    9. ".. I wrote in Pasquale's Magpie, who challenged Khairy Jamaluddin to prove his allegation that Anwar Ibrahim is a traitor and a puppet of the US and the Jews, that talk is cheap.

At such a young age, Khairy is losing so much of the little credibility that he has.

He's in a hurry to build himself up as a candiate at the next general election. He will contest in the safest of seats but he does not feel safe. Poor soul.

People have not forgotten - will not forget - the "leg up" he got from Kalimullah. Now he's jobless but he's the de facto Umno Youth chief. he did not contest for the post.

      He needs to talk big.

Anwar a foreign spy? We've heard of that one before. I've heard about the allegation made about Kalimullah, too. That Kalimullah used to work with the Straits Times Singapore convinced some people that he was a Singapore spy.

Even Khairy has been lablled as a Singapore lackey. If cafe talk is to be believed, then Khairy is a seed planted by Singapore after meticulous planning with the help of Israel.

My point is ....- talk is cheap. I still remember Khairy's big boast about Starbucks and how he was going to list out Malaysian companies that have links with the Zionist regime of Israel.

Where the buck is the list Khairy?

The more he opens his mouth, the more of the little crdibility that he has is lost. Which is good. Malaysians need to see this guy for what he is.

P.S. I am still waiting for your
      Starbucks list, KJ.

“By calling Anwar an American stooge, he is parroting what Dr M (Mahathir) has been saying after the sacking (of Anwar) and nobody believes that anyway. He (Anwar) is close not only with the Americans but also with Middle Easterners, Asean leaders and European leaders. He’s engaged with all parties, and the world,” he said when contacted today.

Meanwhile, party vice-president R Sivarasa described Khairy’s comments as “politically bankrupt and desperate.”

“These are the kinds of comments Umno Youth would resort to when they have no issues to present to the public. These comments show that deep down inside, Umno is very worried about the impact of Anwar on national politics,” he said when contacted.

“This is their desperate attempt to contain his influence. This in a way shows that Anwar is a real threat to Umno. I would like to say to Khairy that if you are serious, allow Anwar to debate with any of the Umno leaders on whatever allegations on prime time national television. I'm confident they won't allow this to happen,” he added.

Meanwhile, Anwar’s personal aide Nik Nazmi said the party de-facto leader is on a working trip in Turkey.

“He doesn’t really care to respond to Khairy’s comments. What was said is beneath him,” he said.

PKR vice-president Azmin Ali said the position of PKR on the NEP is “very clear.”

“We do not protect based on race but we protect the poor irrespective of race. Our policy is very clear, we don’t protect based on race,” he added.

Azmin Ali claimed that the NEP has been “hijacked” by the Umno elites and has resulted in a poorer Malaysia.

“If you look at the figures, we are now five times poorer compared to Singapore. They would like to keep the Malays backwards and poorer.

“Politically it would be easier for them to bribe them during elections and they would like to keep it that way. They have not moved on with more progressive programmes to protect the interest of the majority of Malays,” he said.

"...It doesn’t matter how highly-educated you are, or which side of the fence you’re on, if you are an Umno member, you’re prone to spout the same bullshit.

He’s right about the “future of the Malays” thing, but maybe not in the way he sees or means it. The Malays need to decide whether they want to remain as sheep at the mercy of the wolves among them, or if they want to break free from servility.

Anwar being “a puppet of the United States and the Jews” is another matter.

If I have it correct, isn’t Malaysia now much better pals with the Americans than before?

And here we go again with the Jews.

Let’s see what the Americans say about Khairy’s statement, and then, if we wanted to engage in some gutter politics, decide who is whose puppet. Shall we do that, KJ?
