PAS-UMNO "Malay Unity" Talks: Chinese Voters Will Bite the Bullet AGAIN

Prior to the historical date of March 8 .....the Chinese have had enough of the racist policies of UMNO (NOT the Malays, as there is a stark difference between UMNO and the Malays).

Yes, we Chinese were ready to bite the bullet, face the consequences, however bad they may be.

Fifty years of suppression under BN/Umno, what’s another century with PAS (who are not Umno)? Die, die-lah.

We voted, we exulted under Pakatan Rakyat. We greeted PAS and PKR as brother and sister of the new Malaysian nation. One for all, and all for one. Historical!

Now PAS wants to talk about Malay unity (with UMNO) - or is it Islamic unity?

How will this alliance play out in the future?

We bit the bullet, we will bite it again.

WHY did the Chinese vote for PAS during the 12th general election?

Perhaps, the simplest answers are 'Enough is enough' or that they were 'Fed up with the BN, specifically the MCA'.

If we were to read deeper into the two answers given above, then I think it is also time to read further into the FEELINGS of the new political mentality of the non-Malays.

Prior to the historical date of March 8, many Chinese were saying :
"Moon (PAS) also CAN..... Die, die-lah ".
All indications that the Chinese have had enough of the racist policies of Umno (not the Malays, as there is a stark difference between Umno and the Malays).

Historical!

Now PAS wants to talk about Malay unity - or is it Islamic unity?

Whatever.

The notion of this unholy alliance is not unexpected for if Umno can plunder the country dry and now the holy and righteous PAS wants to marry them, SO BE IT. We bit the bullet before, and we will bite it again. Die only mah.

Perhaps, upon the consummation of this marriage, PAS will never dare to look into a mirror ever again, because what they will see are kafir, so meticulously branded by PAS of its new spouse, before March 8.

How will this alliance play out in the future? Socially, the Chinese and Indians will never, ever, ever trust PAS again.

But what about the non-Malays (and, also the non-Muslims) who called themselves Umno members?

Are they not second-class citizens like the Chinese and Indians under BN?

Politically, Malaysia will be even more racist than the first fifty years and when push comes to shove, nobody wins.

Economically, the heyday of Malaysia’s economical might, one of the Asian dragons, was over two decades ago, because of a CORRUPTED government. Do we think that PAS/Umno can bring it back to life?

We bit the bullet, WE WILL BITE IT AGAIN.

    Excerpts:

PAS decided today against any cooperation with the Barisan Nasional or Umno to form a government, either at the state or federal level, be it in the form of power-sharing or merger.

Party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the decisions reached during the five-hour meeting yesterday have always been the party’s stand all this while and were further reinforced during the discussions.

Speaking to reporters at the party headquarters after chairing a joint-meeting of the party’s Central Committee and Ulama Syura (Consultative) Council, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said with this decision, "any offer from Umno to set up a joint-government at all levels does not arise".

Abdul Hadi also reiterated PAS’ stand to remain in Pakatan Rakyat, a coalition of opposition parties that helms five state governments.

"I would like to reiterate our stand to remain in Pakatan by playing an active and positive role in line with our collective struggle, including our fight to change the government. In this context, we would like to invite Umno MPs to join Pakatan, either (through) PAS or PKR, so that we can support this struggle together."

As to whether the meetings will be called muqabalah (face-to-face meeting) or muzakarah (discussion), he said: "I have used the word pertemuan (meeting) in general, it does not matter what term is used."

To a question, Abdul Hadi said the party appreciates the support from non-Muslims, especially during the last general election, and in future, it plans to give a more substantial role for non-Muslim supporters to play within the political realm.

He said the party will however continue to have talks or discussions with anyone, including political parties, non-governmental organisations, institutions and individuals in the interest of the country and ummah.

  • PAS Loyalty Well-Proven

    by

    Abu Mubarak

From Malaysiakini Letter to Editor: Read here

    Excerpts:
The assertion that PAS having secret talks with Umno as an act of betrayal towards Pakatan Rakyat is rather premature.

In principle, PAS has the right to talk to any party and such talks do not necessarily harm Pakatan Rakyat in any way.

It was not made public perhaps because of the sensitivity at the time.

The confusion arose when the talks were linked squarely to a power-sharing deal between PAS and Umno. It should have been a foregone conclusion that the deal would be rejected by PAS at the very first opportunity.

The only blunder committed by PAS with regards to this issue was the poor communication among its own ranks. It seems things were not well communicated even among themselves, let alone with other parties within Pakatan.

The bottom line is PAS did NOT betray its partners in Pakatan despite various offers by Umno for power-sharing during these talks. A person who refuses a bribe after being offered one is at least a level above a person who has never been offered one before.

PAS’ loyalty was proven when they rejected Umno’s offer for power-sharing at the very first opportunity and decided to remain in Pakatan.

It was also good that PAS continued to talk to Umno despite categorically deciding against a PAS-Umno power sharing deal. This because they are series of issues that, from a PAS point of view, could benefit all the five states under the administration of Pakatan Rakyat if the political tensions could be toned down to a level that is more manageable for both sides.

PAS understands well how difficult it is to rule a state without good relations with the federal government and PAS was unsure if all the states under Pakatan could handle this pressure, especially with the state leaders lacking experience.

Not all the menteris besar and chief ministers could swallow all the bitter things Tok Guru Nik Aziz had swallowed for two decades in Kelantan.

It is not about being pessimistic, but of being more realistic over calculated risks. In fact, there were efforts to incite a revolt among the Malays in certain states ruled by Pakatan.

In these delicate times, not all issues can be solved through politics alone. Some may require higher diplomatic approaches which are more complicated and mind-teasing. PAS merely decided to explore these possibilities as it believed that it is in a better position to do so.

This only shows how loyal and rational the PAS leadership was in dealing with this issue.

  • Muzakarah: Senjata Jahat UMNO Demi Survival Politik

    by

    Intan Abdullah

    From Harakah Daily: Read here

  • PAS Tuan Guru Nik Aziz's Curve Ball to UMNO: A STROKE of GENIUS

Read HERE and HERE on The Aisehman Blog for more

Meaning of "Throw a curve ball": See here

Throw (someone) a curve (ball) - to surprise someone with something that is difficult or unpleasant to deal with.

"Nik Aziz's Proposal is Sweetened Poison for UMNO"

    1. The First Curve Ball:

Pas spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has suggested that Umno and Pas be dissolved and a new party formed to unite ALL Malays.

However, he said, the new party must be based on Islam and acceptable to members of both parties.
Nik Aziz is a wily old man.

UMNO had the upper political hand and was dictating the agenda in the UMNO-PAS song and dance.

Then he throws them a curve ball.

With that one stroke of genius, he has put UMNO on the defensive and publicly exposed the so-called dialogues as nothing more than a waste of time.

It has also put PAS leaders who actually support the talks in a very difficult position indeed.

      Brilliant !!

    2. The Second Curve Ball
"PAS will push for the implementation of Hudud law if the merger between PAS and UMNO becomes a reality", Nik Aziz said.
      Note:
Under Islam, crimes classified under hudud such as murder, theft and adultery carry severe punishment including the amputation of limbs and stoning to death.

Meanwhile, qisas (law of retaliation) allows for, among others, compensation in the form of money or property if the heirs of the victim forgive the murderer
      .
Based on these demands, if the merger does go through, on one side, you will have PAS and UMNO.

And on the other side, you will have PKR, DAP, and all the other parties that will abandon Barisan Nasional, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, for Pakatan Rakyat version 2.

Who do you think will adopt a multi-racial, multi-cultural approach to drive the progress and development of the nation?

Malays, largely resident in Peninsular Malaysia, make up just over half of the population (53.3%).Will all of them vote for a Hudud law-advocating PAS-UMNO Islamic party?

What is certain is that very, very few non-Malays will vote for such a party.

So who will the majority of Malaysians vote for — PAS-UMNO or Pakatan Rakyat V2?

    WHAT OTHERS SAY

    • MCA's Knee-Jerk Reaction

MCA - the second largest party in the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition - is flabbergasted by the proposal.

"I am disappointed and gravely concerned with Nik Aziz's statement to implement hudud and qisas laws as it would mean the creation of a theocratic Islamic state. I urge Umno to object against PAS' proposal as it is a matter of principle", said MCA Youth Secretary-General Wee Ka Siong, who is vying for the Chinese-based party’s vice-president post in the upcoming polls in October. • DAP's Knee-Jerk Reaction

DAP national chairman Karpal Singh said PAS had thrown grave doubts over its credibility, adding that Pakatan Rakyat should seriously consider, in view of events of late, whether PAS should be allowed continued membership in the alliance.

What Will ASEAN say to a Malaysian Islamic State? by Dr. Farish Noor. Read here for more

    Excerpts:

For several weeks now the Malaysian political scene has been abuzz with talk about a possible merger between the nationalist UMNO party and the Islamist opposition party PAS, on the basis of further developing and ensuring Malay-Muslim unity in the country.

But an Islamic state in Malaysia? The implications are manifold and would consume the attention and energy of a legion of political analysts.

How would such a merger between the nationalist UMNO and the Islamist PAS work? Would Malaysia finally declare itself to be ‘the Islamic state of Malaysia’?

What would happen to the existing institutions of state such as the Parliament and the Monarchy? (PAS, for instance, has mooted the idea that the Parliament would be subsumed under a more powerful council of guardians and ulama since the 1980s.)

Among the ranks of the Islamist party itself there are dissenting voices that argue that the latest gambit by UMNO to bring PAS closer to it is nothing more than a thinl

How all this will affect Malaysia’s image abroad and how this may damage Malaysia’s standing as a moderate Muslim state in the region.

For decades the Malaysian government has presented the country as a bastion of moderate Islam while decrying PAS as a ‘fundamentalist’ party.

Is this ‘fundamentalist party’ now being courted by UMNO to secure UMNO’s dominant position in the country?

And would this mean that UMNO will now allow the very same ‘fundamentalist’ PAS to dictate the form and content of normative Islam in Malaysia?

Should the UMNO-PAS talks continue, and should PAS ever be brought into the ruling coalition by UMNO, the ASEAN region may have to look closer at Malaysia and consider the implications of this move for the region as a whole.

A Malaysia with Islamists in power and a Malaysia that finally commits itself to the creation of an Islamic state will have long-term implications for ASEAN and the wider community.

It is for these reasons that the behind-the-scenes negotiations between UMNO and PAS in Malaysia cannot be seen as domestic concerns alone. ASEAN today has become too integrated and inter-dependent that any radical shift in any single ASEAN country is bound to have an impact on the economic viability and political stability of the region.

UMNO today may be desperate to hold on to power, but even UMNO has to realise that there are internal and external limits to the manoeuvrability of any party.

Yes, that fool of a DPM wants to carry on the UMNO-PAS rap session to find solutions to what plagues Malays and Muslims!

If he truly can’t see the problem, he can talk until the cows come home and he’ll still be nowhere nearer figuring out the problem.

The curse of the Malays : UMNO

    The bane of the Muslims : Islam-as I say-ists.

    Period.

    What’s there to figure out?

Get rid of UMNO and the Malays are freed from servitude to manipulative parasites.
Say no to the "Islam-as I say-ists" and Muslims will finally have the God-given space to think, to ask and to decide for themselves, and not have to submit to power-craving men who claim authority to speak for God.

A Doctor's More Objective View on the Value of the Pusrawi Hospital Medical Report of Saiful's Ass

From Malaysiakini's Letter to Editor: Read here

    Quote:

"Damn! SODOMY is now the most common word in this nation that pretends itself to be the paragon of Islamic awareness, as witnessed by the endless symposiums, seminars, talks, gatherings of so-called Islamic scholars with degrees and scrolls attesting to their Islamic achievements. But in reality, this country is fast turning into a cesspool of filth and moral degradation!"
    - Zainol Abideen of "Mahaguru58" Blog

"... Having worked in the emergency departments of a few hospitals, I fully AGREE that the doctor at Hospital Pusrawi is NOT in a position to decisively state whether Saiful had been sodomised or not.

And all the more in a hospital like Pusrawi that has NO forensic pathology support.

And to be fair to Hospital Pusrawi, I DISAGREE with those who say that from the medical report, it is clear that sodomy did not happen.

Nevertheless, I think the VALUE of this leaked medical report lies in these two points:

    1. Should this report prove to be authentic, we can say one thing for sure:
There was NO gross injury on Saiful's private parts at that time he was presented for medical examination.
If there were gross injuries like redness, swelling, bleeding, abrasions, bruises, etc, ANY doctor regardless of whether he is a specialist or not, would be able to recognise it.

But having said that, NO gross injuries does NOT mean sodomy had NOT happened before.

    2. More importantly, should this report prove to be true and because this was Saiful's FIRST medical visit before he was referred to a government hospital, this would PREVENT anyone from coming out with a fabricated medical report saying that there was gross injuries on Saiful's body.

And that is where the greatest value of this report lies - NOT in disproving sodomy, but in preventing any further fabrication.

      COMMENTARY

From "The Aisehman Blog": Read here for more

It seems that some people (and here) are raising the possibility that Anwar and the Pusrawi doctor are in cahoots, solely based on the fact that they were part of the same organisation, Regional Islamic Da’wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP), years ago.

Lost in all this speculation is the amazing coincidence that Saiful, ON HIS OWN, went to a hospital where on duty that day was this particular doctor.

Nobody told Saiful to go to that particular hospital to see that particular doctor on that particular day. By his pet uncle’s (or is it Uncle Pet) own admission, he went there on his own.

And if Saiful knew beforehand that the doctor was Anwar’s man and was on duty that day at Pusrawi, but yet still went ahead to see him, I can now see why and how Saiful flunked university.

Some have sought to also link Saiful to the doctor, arguing that the doctor once worked at Universiti Malaya and Saiful the ex-university student might have made his acquaintance.

Lost in all this is the fact that Saiful attended Universiti Tenaga, not Universiti Malaya. And Saiful did not study medicine. In fact, he didn’t study much.

They even go further to speculate that Saiful might have a connection with RISEAP, the organisation that the doctor and Anwar was part of.

Again, lost in all this is the fact, presented by the speculator himself, that the doctor worked there between 1993 and 1995, when Saiful was between eight and ten years old.

And I like the way the speculator ends his speculation with the cry, “Hidup Malaysiaku!”

That “shout” — another variant is “Hidup Malaysia!” — tells everyone who knows about these things who the writer is associated with.

Most former political detainees can tell you where and from whom they’ve heard it before.
      OTHER COMMENTS FROM INTERNET/BLOG READERS

Read here and here and here and here

      • A qualified doctor with 15 years or more years experience has, after a careful and reasonably thorough examination, given an MR that there were no signs of rape, tear, penetration, bleeding etc.
If you go to any hospital complaining of chest pains they are not going to immediately prescribe an angiogram of bypass operation. They will monitor the condition of the patient and the vital organs, symptons and statistics - sweating, numbness, degree of pain, breathing difficulties, heart-beat rate etc - and only call in the Consultant Cardiac guy when it is reasonably certain the patient is having a degree of cardiac arrest. Not sledgehammer to fly response.

In this case, Dr.Osman saw no outward signs of sodomy or rape and did the decent and honest thing by advising Saiful that he could get a second opinion to satisfy himself. Does that sound or look like the behaviour of a Conspirator or someone with ulterior motives?
      • Most Accident and Emergency Units (or Emergency Rooms) are staffed by non-specialist medical officers, who are qualified doctors with a valid practicing certificate from MMC (Medical Council of Malaysia).
When you see a doctor with a complaint (whatever it is), he takes the relevant history, and does the relevant physical examination. He then makes a provisional diagnosis and may proceed with further relevant investigations (blood, urine, xrays etc ..) to confirm or rule out his provisional diagnosis depending on the strength of the history and physical examination. All these is recorded handwritten in his ‘notes’ in the hospital’s stationary, sometimes in full, often in shorthand.

The doctor in question seems to have done all these. He does not need to be a specialist to evaluate the given complaint. And what’s the difference between ’sodomy’ and a ‘plastic inserted into the anus’?
      • Medical-legal cases are complicated, especially in cases of alleged sexual assault. In first world countries, sexual assault cases would be examine by senior doctor with a lot of postgraduate training in the field. This doctor did one thing right, which is referring the alleged victim to a hospital with more expertise and resources TRO (to rule out) assault. The doctor made the right conclusion, ie he want to rule out assault.

      • One point being missed is WHEN this medical report or note (or whatever it can be called) was written, there was NO way Dr.Osman could have known that this issue would be in the headlines of the nation for the next month.

      • Whether the doctor knew Anwar or not also does not change anything.
The patient is reported to have said he was sodmised by a VVIP. He is also reported as having said that a plastic object was inserted to his backside. Legally this would be indecent assault, NOT sodomy.

The doctor may not have known that this is different legally, and since the patient said he was sodomised, he advised him to go to GH to rule out sodomy.

The point is the doctor could not possibly have had any reason at that time to write anything false, unless he is extremely brilliant and the word sodomy immediately made him think of 1998 and Anwar and thought HAHA!!

      • Unfortunately, in the Court of law, as you are well versed in, this piece of paper is as good a toilet paper unless the maker of the document stands in the witness box and testify as to its contents. Unfair as it may sound, the police fully understands this and is bending (or rather breaking) the law to ensure the this remains a piece of paper. Then again, what’s it about the best evidence rule when the person cannot be traced? The Document is still as good as the paper its worth.

      • Look at Pusrawi’s statement closely and we can conclude that an ANAL examination was indeed conducted. Call it “not sodomy related”. So what? That part of the anatomy was checked and there was no sign of penetration e.g swelling, bleeding or reddish coloration in the area. A casual examination would have revealed that to the experienced doctor. Is the hospital trying to wriggle out of the controversy, now that the Health Ministry has threatened to take actions against it for leaking the report? Why did the police question Dr Osman then?

      • Rocky (Ahirudin Attan), Stop posting nonsense & rubbish article like this!So what if Dr Osman know Anwar? Is that meant he know him then he will do whatever which is against the law? Anwar also know Musa Hassan, so what he had did to Anwar?! Please use your brain to think and analyse before posting rubbish!

      • Rocky (Ahirudin Attan), Your facts are WRONG. Anwar was never in RISEAP. There were many Burmese Muslims in PERKIM AND RISEAP since Tunku was the President of both organisations until he died. After that Patinggi Taib Mahmud took over RISEAP and PERKIM. Now RISEAP is under Pusat Islam Administration.Mahathir is the President of PERKIM. So get your facts right. Anwar was never in RISEAP

      • Rocky (Ahirudin Attan), Why do I get the feeling that you are very pro-Mahathir and all your posts are geared towards discrediting Anwar and the Pakatan Rakyat? Albeit in a subtle tone?

      • Rocky (Ahirudin Attan), I am disgusted at your insuniation that Anwar is up to no good as well. DSAI would not be so stupid to only produce only such a report. Like you said you are sicked of all this, so please do not add one more speculation.

      • I am suprised how cheap this blogger ("Rocky Bru") shows off that he is anti-Anwar. When there are so much dubious things on the part of the police investigating and government ministers giving statements about this case etc. To start with, how is that you never ask why the police did not give the police report to Anwar? Why is the police so hot about the 'liwat' case more than the murder case? What about other issues like SD1 and SD2 and Bala? The whole system of UMNO/BN stinks...I hope you use your God-given brain to good use and don't be a goon following the UMNOputras blindly!

      • I thought Rocky (Ahirudin Attan), doesn't want to be part of this or fed up about all this after he went on STRIKE...hmm

      • I think the Pusrawi GM is quite right. One look at Saiful’s anus, the good doctor concluded that no further examination is necessary. Since Saiful still insist that he was sodomised and planning to lodge a police report then the doctor just advise him to go to the nearby HKL. I think the doctor just don’t want to get himself involve and file the report. If the police requested a report then the hospital will give a proper one. Maybe they did but not the one based on the doctor true opinion.I was told any medical report made by a doctor registered with MMA is a valid document for court purposes. Doesn’t matter if he is not a specialist.

      • Only a specialist can diagnose sodomy? I guess it must be a proctologist. Usually, a proctologist is consulted when a patient needs surgery, or has a complex proctological condition with requires the attention of a professional. Basic problems like small hemorrhoids and mild constipation may be treated by a general practitioner. However, when it becomes apparent that more investigation of a problem is needed, or a patient requires specialized surgery, a general practitioner will refer the patient to a proctologist for high quality care.

      • The tenets of medical diagnosis are good history taking and thorough physical examination. When that’s done well, more often than not, a doctor would not go wrong. Based on the case note, Dr Mohamad Osman had done the needful outstandingly. His medical notes tell us almost all that we need to know. You do not need a specialist to conduct an appropriate physical examination. A rape/sodomy victim in the middle of the night in Gua Musang will probably be examined by the Medical Officer on-call.

      • Fearing actions by the Health Ministry, Pusrawi is now trying to wriggle out of this controversy by denying a sodomy related examination was conducted on Saiful.
A casual look at the anus could have convinced the doctor that Saiful was lying since there was no swelling, enlargement or reddish coloration. He did not see the need to “go deeper.” My second point. After being confirmed by Dr Osman that Saiful had not been molested, could he have ‘injured’ himself and then gone to KLGH for a second opinion - a more favorable one. Mind you, he lodged the police report 4 hours after going to Pusrawi.

      • I would like to write the following statements in the name of GOD whom I believe. I am a goverment doctor in the rank of consultant working in hospital Kuala Lumpur. I know personally the doctors who examined Saiful on that day -28 June 2008.
The so called medical report mentioned in the NST is a fabrication or imagination by the UMNO paper. There is NO such medical report submitted to the police yet.

When examine Saiful, the specialist could not find any signs of Saiful being sodomised. Saiful was very cheerful, unlike real sodomised patient who will usaually very sad and disturbed.Saiful was subsequently admitted to the ward and observed for a day.He was completely well in the ward and not emotionally disturbed.
      • Saiful is reportedly to have lodge a police report that he was last sodomised on 26th June, i.e. 2 days before he went to see doctor and lodge the police report. Now it is reportedly certified by a doctor 4 hours before he reportedly lodge the police report. If he was sodomised during these 4 hours, it was not reported in his reported police report. I am now confused.

      • Another look at this ‘evidence’ , if you can consider it as evidence at all, the way I see, it actually does not tell you anything. It simply conclude that it cannot conclude. It did not say that anal penetration did occur, it simply says that it cannot find evidence of occurrence. It could still have happen. One could have use lubricant before submission (or whatever you call it). It can be argued this way. Am i right or not? Is this good enough for the court of public opinion, perhaps. It may not be so on the other side.

      • Don’t get too excited…The report was preliminary and not conclusive, and that’s the reason why he was referred to HKL specialists where detailed investigations were done.

Saiful-Sodomy Saga: Saiful Allegedly Met Police Officer in Hotel Three Days BEFORE Going to Pusrawi Hospital

      From Malaysia-Today - Read Here

      1. Saiful Allegedly Met and Talked with the Police Three Days BEFORE His Check-up at Pusrawi Hospital

Photobucket PhotobucketAt 2.30pm on Wednesday, 25 June 2008, Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) II Mohd Rodwan Mohd Yusof met Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan in Room 619 of the Concorde Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

Prior to this secret meeting, Rodwan and Saiful spoke on the phone at least eight (8) times.

      2. 28 June 2008 at 2.00pm Saiful went to see Dr Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid of the Hospital Pusrawi

To ‘complain’ that he had been sodomised by ‘a very important person’ and that he wished to lodge a police report.

The doctor, however, found no traces or evidence that he had been sodomised and suggested, for purposes of the police report, that Saiful go to a government hospital.
Who is Mohd Rodwan Mohd Yusof (Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) II) ?

The Pathetic Gyrations of Tunku Abdul Aziz

      by

      Din Merican

He is with the University of Cambodia as Visiting Professor (Global Strategy) (since 2002) and a member of the Advisory Board of the University’s Asia Economic Forum, and serve the Phnom Penh based Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace (since 1996) as Senior Research Fellow. Excerpts: Read here for more

Tunku Abdul Aziz is my friend from Bank Negara and Sime Darby days.

I do not think I am flattering him if I hold the view that the Tunku belongs to society’s elite; his cultural background and lineage, education and career, particularly in their latter manifestations in Transparency International (Malaysian Chapter) and Special Advisor on Ethics to Mr. Kofi Annan, then Secretary-General of the United Nations, all place him in the UPPER crust of Malaysian society.

So what he wrote on July 27 in the New Sunday Times comes as a fantastic and shocking surprise in its abandonment of the norms of democratic discourse you would think a man of Tunku Aziz’s credentials would find little difficulty in abiding.

The Political Rot in Malaysian Society

Few would contest the view that Malaysian society is displaying acute symptoms of political and social pathology that indicate it has arrived at a critical pass: either we check and reverse the evident rot in the institutions of civil society or we not just slither but careen down the road to perdition.

The personal and political predicament of Anwar Ibrahim is emblematic of this juncture in our nation’s history.

One may tax me for seeing this situation in apocalyptic terms: If Anwar goes down, the country follows suit; if Anwar goes up, our country has a chance to escape the political and social cul de sac the last ten years of our history have conduced.

More than any other leader, the recent odyssey of Anwar Ibrahim has come to embody the potential for disaster or deliverance for Malaysia from its present malaise.

The prologue to this point is that the UMNO-dominated Barisan Nasional has been oozing the moral and political legitimacy to govern our country.

The haemorrhaging of its moral legitimacy, derived from right conduct and deportment of the governing elite, started in 1988 when Lord President Tun Salleh Abas was judicially extirpated. The political legitimacy to govern began deserting the government from the day Anwar Ibrahim was sacked and then gaoled for moral and political misconduct on trumped up charges.

When in September 2007, an already freed and partly exonerated Anwar exposed a video clip that retrospectively cast doubt on the validity of the two charges against him in court cases in 1998 and 1999, the steady erosion in the moral and political legitimacy to govern accelerated to the point where on March 8, 2008, Malaysian voters, excepting those in Sabah and Sarawak, endorsed the view that the rot was beyond the capacity of UMNO-Barisan Nasional to stop.

The loss of two thirds majority by UMNO-Barisan Nasional meant that a psychologicl threshold had been breached. It was a political tsunami that left Badawi and his cohort reeling in disbelief. Ipso facto a politicl crisis obtained.

      Tunku Aziz's Fallacious Argument

Tunku Aziz in his column contends that Anwar has been playing this crisis with self-serving threatrics that constitute an infernal distraction to the legitimate duty of governance that behooves Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi.

This is a more fallacious argument that if one were to say that the maneuvers of the UMNO-dominated Federal Government in early 1994 were a deliberate undermining of the legitimacy of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), which had won a tenuous majority in the state election, to govern. The PBS government fell through crossovers, brazenly engineered by Datuk Seri Mahathir bin Mohamad.

And today, there is strong reason to suspect that the state election of 1994 in Sabah was tainted by the participation of hastily imported labour from the Philippines and Indonesia who were dubiously given the right to vote.

In fact, the effect of this electoral larceny — the disproportionate enlargment of the population of Sabah — is top on the agenda of grand rectification sought by BN-Sabah legislators elected in Malaysia’s 12th General Elections.

Tunku Aziz's Amnesia on Recent History

The lapse in Tunku Aziz’s ability to recall recent past history borders on amnesia in the saga of the alleged report of sodomy against Anwar Ibrahim. I say “alleged report” because till today the supposed accused has not been shown the alleged victim’s police report.

Is it not imperative of the Police to show the alleged perpetrator the complaint made against him by his supposed victim?

Is the no-show indicative that the said report is a work-in-progress, a contrivance built around gerrymandered evidence?

Instead Tunku Aziz sheds an aria of persiflage by attacking Anwar’s refusal to give a DNA sample to the Police. He has not only forgotten the saga of the purloined DNA sample of Anwar’s in the episode of the “semen-stained” mattress threatrically paraded in the 1998 case, he is obviously amnesic about his role in the Royal Commission on the management of the Malaysian Police Force (December 2003-March 2005).

What caused this Royal Commission to recommend the creation of an independent Public Complaints and Misconduct Commission for the Police Force, for which no action has been initiated?

What would Tunku Aziz, a key member of the said commission, surmise as the reasons for the failure to implement this recommendation — surely not, a sudden surge in the probity of the Force!

Tunku Aziz describes as “preposterous” Anwar’s claim that the latest allegations of sodomy is “part of a diabolically clever plot” to stop him from becoming Prime Minister.

How conveniently he forgot that at a public forum in Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, in late September 2007, in the presence of Anwar Ibrahim and others, he commented on the Lingam video clip that the whole episode was reflective of the ethos that the end justifies the means.

If that is the case, then today Anwar has every reason to be circumspect.

Furthermore, it is presumptuous of him to think that the public support for Anwar is beginning to “wear thin”. The evidence is that, even in the UMNO-BN bastions of Johor and Melaka, the crowds at Anwar’s recent ceramah are waxing rather than waning.

Tunku Aziz’s speculation that Anwar is losing ground is akin to his patron’s (Abdullah Badawi’s) pre-election dismissal of Anwar’s threat as “nothing”.

The Motive in Tunku Aziz's Article

It is clear to me at least that Tunku Aziz’s article is in response to international criticisms by the United States, Europe and Japan and prominent personalities, academics and scholars on the latest treatment of Anwar.

This is not a proxy war, but an outrage against actions taken by the government to persecute an internationally respected and admired leader of the movement for democratic change and good governance in Malaysia.

Our legal process is vulnerable to political interference and manipulation. We have enough grounds to suspect that the phenomenon has not ended.

The recent Royal Commission headed by former Chief Judge of Malaya, Tan Sri Haidar Noor, confirmed the need to undertake serious judicial reforms to restore the badly battered image of our criminal justice system.

For Tunku Aziz to suggest otherwise is indicative of the powers that can be brought to bear upon scribes like him who are trying to work within the system and perhaps change it.

Tunku Aziz's Failure as a Member of the Creative Elite

The leadership elite’s ability to respond creatively to challenges determines a civilization’s destiny. Tunku Aziz belongs to that elite in Malaysia.

On the basis of the arguments he has adduced in his article, can Tunku Aziz say that he is responding creatively to our crisis?

The answer is an unqualified NO.

      • The sycophancy he displays undermines his reputation and credibility as an exponent of transparent governance and ethics.

      • He does not belong in Toynbee’s creative elite because he has enlisted as a chorus boy for a corrupt and dysfunctional regime.

      • In the end, what he writes now demeans his former selves in Transparency International and at the United Nations.

      • He has become no less and no more than a poseur, the sort that can, at the drop of coin, switch sides with no compunction.

      • In Dante’s gradations of hell, Tunku Aziz has become the kind who in times of great moral and political crisis do not just abandon a politic neutrality — those that Dante in “Divine Comedy” consigns to the hottest places — but he takes sides, the WRONG one at that.
And that is the tragedy of my erstwhile friend.

      Doctor's Medical Report on Saiful's Ass : Where's the Sodomy ?

Medical Report by Dr Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid,

Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan was examined at the Pusrawi Hospital by a doctor, four hours BEFORE he lodged a police report alleging he was sexually assaulted by Anwar Ibrahim.

Hospital Pusrawi (Pusat Rawatan Islam) located in Jalan Tun Razak is a government-linked Islamic medical institution.

The examining doctor on duty,Dr Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid, said that the patient had alleged he was assaulted by the intrusion of a piece of "plastic" in the anus.

According to the medical report by Dr Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid, there is NO evidence that Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan was sodomised or sexually assaulted .

Dr. Mohamed Osman, a Burmese Muslim, has 20 years of experience as a doctor. He previously worked in government hospitals before joining Pusrawi about a year ago.

The medical report by Dr. Mohamed Osman which was recorded at 2.14pm, found "zero active bleeding", "zero ulcer or pus", "zero tear and scar" in Saiful's anus. The report also said that Saiful appeared "alert", "comfortable", "not pale" and did not show any fever symptoms.

The report's concluding remarks advised Saiful to go to a government hospital so as "to rule out" assault and sodomy.

It is believed that Saiful went to TWO different hospitals on the day he lodged the police report (28th June 2008) .

      1. He first went to Pusrawi Hospital at 2 pm complaining of 'tenesmus' - a medical term for difficulty and pain in passing motion and was examined by Dr Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid who was on duty on that day.

      2. At 6pm on that same day, Saiful went to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for his second medical examination.

He subsequently lodged a report against Anwar at the police beat at the hospital.

According to an expert who has dealt with rape and sodomy cases, the court will only accept evidence from a government hospital but the FIRST medical examination must collaborate with the second report, otherwise this could be challenged during the trial.

"From the report, the doctor had failed to find any evidence to support the patient's complaint. That was why he asked the patient to go to a government hospital to conclusively rule out assault or sodomy," said the expert who requested anonymity.

It is learnt that the police have recorded statements from Dr.Mohamed Osman after Saiful lodged the report against Anwar.

The doctor was said to be under tremendous stress as a result of the police interrogation over a number of days, and was advised by the hospital to take leave. A check at the emergency unit where Mohamed Osman is attached revealed that he has taken leave since last week.

Meanwhile, Pusrawi general manager Wan Mahmood Wan Yaacob refused to comment on the matter

      Siapa Bapa Saiful ?

      Read here for more

Itulah sebabnya mengapa bapa Saiful enggan menunjukkan mukanya dikhalayak ramai, terutamanya didepan kamera.

Kerjanya senang.

PAS information chief, Mahfuz Omar today, APOLOGISED for LYING about PAS's meeting with Umno.

He claimed he was directed by certain PAS top leaders to do so.

Mahfuz, as the party's information chief, had in the past OFFICIALLY denied that PAS had met with Umno to discuss the possibility of jointly ruling Selangor.

He stressed that the denial was done in his capacity as the party's information chief and based on the instruction given to him by the party leadership and NOT made on his personal capacity.

He put the blame on a "few individuals that failed to give the real picture to party leaders".

Mahfuz, also the Pokok Sena MP, wants the "few individuals" to come forward and explain to party members and supporters the details of what had transpired in the meetings.

Mahfuz said he was also ready to face any criticism or punishment by party members following his "accidental mistake".

Mahfuz in a two-page statement issued today said,

"I write this open letter to sincerely apologise to all PAS members and supporters denying that the party had met with Umno.

Again I apologise for my misdemeanour.

" (A few individuals') decision to keep certain issues pertaining to the PAS-Umno meeting in the dark had prompted the party leaders to take the position of perceiving that no meetings between the both parties had taken place.

Because of these individuals, who had in the name of PAS and WITHOUT the knowledge of the party central working committee, did not provide detailed information on the matter, the party leadership had instructed me to issue the denial.

They must claim responsibility because this had happened due to their indiscretion.

I myself was surprised when they (Umno leaders) and PAS president (Hadi Awang) had confirmed that meetings DID take place, which was contrary to what I had stated initially.

I realised that history will not repeat itself but humans do make mistakes. I urge other PAS leaders to be honest to our members and supporters and to also focus on strengthening our political ties with our fellow Pakatan members...."

Permohonan Maaf Ketua Penerangan PAS Berhubung Isu Muzakarah

FROM HARAKAH DAILY - READ HERE

      Maafkanlah saya.

      Sekian, wassalam.

      Yang benar,

      HAJI MAHFUZ HAJI OMAR
      Ketua Penerangan PAS Pusat
      Ahli Parlimen Pokok Sena.

PAS tidak akan layan tawaran Umno - Nizar

      Read here for more

Menteri Besar Perak, Datuk Seri Ir.

PAS's Dilemma: To Buy UMNO's Ethno-centricity or To Retain Its Fully Islamic Credentials

Read here article by Dr. Farish Noor in "The Other Malaysia"

      Quote:

As a result of this current round of UMNO-PAS negotiations, PAS's image as a NEW, MODERN Islamic party is being DIMINISHED by the day.

So is the trust and confidence of the Malaysian electorate, in particular the non-Malays and non-Muslims. (They) may conclude that PAS's appeals to the Malaysian nation as a whole was just cosmetic a
nd that in the final analysis, despite calling itself an Islamist party, (PAS) is simply a MALAY party concerned about MALAY issues and promoting MALAY interests.

Among the PAS leaders who are trying to engineer this deal are the YOUNGER PAS leaders who were not even members of the party in the 1970s. Hence, they do NOT have the same bitter memories of betrayal and defeat like Nik Aziz does.

Some of these (young) PAS leaders... tend to come from the more outwardly conservative faction who seem more interested in SUPERFICIAL aspects of Islam and Islamisation such as dress codes, making people go to mosques, promoting dakwah (missionary) activities and the like.

How can PAS ever hope to recover the goodwill of the non-Malay and non-Muslim voters who voted for them, should PAS lose their trust?

PAS's gains this time round were partly due to the efforts of the PAS progressive (leaders) who had managed to re-invent the party's image as a modern Islamic party that is more concerned with economic-structural issues like transparency, accountability, free elections, free press and democracy. It was they who managed to secure the support of thousands of non-Malay and non-Muslims who voted for PAS as part of the Pakatan Rakyat on the basis of trust (amanah) and were willing to give PAS a chance to prove that it could reach beyond its Malay-Muslim electorate and speak for all Malaysians.

One can only hope for the sake of Malaysia, and Malaysia's weak but slowly emerging democracy, that the modern progressive voices in PAS will PREVAIL to scuttle this DUBIOUS round of backroom negotiations.

PAS: Caught between Old and New

      by

      Dr. Farish Noor

      Excerpts: Read here for more

Now the cat is out of the bag and the whole of Malaysia knows that there have been secret backroom dealings between UMNO and PAS; ostensibly to bring the two parties together in the name of Malay-Muslim communal solidarity.

We need to pause a while and look at the political factors at work.

Frankly, I see little of Islam or Islamic ethics at work in this latest round of UMNO-PAS dialogue.

      Some basic historical facts:

      • PAS has, in the past, already been part of the BN UMNO-led alliance in the mid-1970s. This was during the time when PAS was led by Asri Muda, perhaps the most ethno-nationalist among PAS's leaders and a man who was seen by many as a Malay first and a Muslim second.

      • PAS's entry into the BN was not without opposition: Many PAS leaders and members abandoned the party and gave up on the Islamist struggle for good.

      • When PAS was in the BN it had to toe the BN line and even contested on the BN ticket.

      • PAS was discredited in the eyes of an entire younger generation of Malaysians and this opened the way for the rise of new Islamist groups like ABIM and Darul Arqam instead.

      • PAS's marriage of convenience led to it being effectively emasculated by UMNO and when it finally left the BN in late 1970s, its base-state Kelantan was in a shambles where a state of Emergency had been declared.

      • PAS lost Kelantan and it took the party more than a decade before it won it back in 1990.
It is for this reason that PAS veterans like Tuan Guru Nik Aziz feel so strongly that this latest round of dialogues between UMNO and PAS should stop. He senses hidden hands that are out to instrumentalise PAS yet again.

But who are the ones who are trying to bring PAS and UMNO together?

      The Young Superficial Islamic Conservatives

Among the PAS leaders who are trying to engineer this deal, are the younger PAS leaders who were not even members of the party in the 1970s, and hence they do NOT have the same bitter memories of betrayal and defeat like Nik Aziz does.

Looking at the profile of some of these PAS (younger) leaders, we see that they tend to come from the more outwardly conservative faction who seem more interested in superficial aspects of Islam and Islamisation such as dress codes, making people go to mosques, promoting dakwah (missionary) activities and the like.

      The Progressive PAS Leaders

PhotobucketThere are also new, progressive forces in the party that understand the need to bring PAS into the political mainstream and to make the party relevant to the Malaysian public as a whole, regardless of race and religion.

These are the PAS leaders who were at the forefront of the BERSIH campaign for free and fair elections, the ones who have been calling for more transparency and accountability, the ones who have tried to re-construct PAS into a modern, relevant Islamist party with national aspirations.

Between these two factions, who were the ones who helped to give PAS its victory at the recent March elections?

It is obvious that PAS's gains this time round were partly due to the efforts of the PAS progressives who had managed to re-invent the party's image as a modern Islamic party that is more concerned with economic-structural issues like transparency, accountability, free elections, free press and democracy.

These were the issues that captured the minds of the new electorate in Malaysia, and not questions like what length a Muslim's beard ought to be.

Furthermore, it was they who managed to secure the support of thousands of non-Malay and non-Muslims who voted for PAS as part of the Pakatan Rakyat on the basis of trust (amanah) and were willing to give PAS a chance to prove that it could reach beyond its Malay-Muslim electorate and speak for all Malaysians.

      Diminishing Trust for PAS

As a result of this current round of UMNO-PAS negotiations, PAS's image as a new, modern Islamic party is being diminished by the day.

So is the trust and confidence of the Malaysian electorate, in particular the non-Malays and non-Muslims, who in the end may conclude that PAS's appeals to the Malaysian nation as a whole was just cosmetic and that in the final analysis, despite calling itself an Islamist party, it is simply a Malay party concerned about Malay issues and promoting Malay interests.

How can PAS ever hope to recover the goodwill of the non-Malay and non-Muslim voters who voted for them, should PAS lose their trust?

It is also ironic that PAS is being courted by its arch-nemesis UMNO, when we consider the simple historical fact that it was UMNO that has been demonising PAS all along.

Have we forgotten the clashes of the mid-1980s, like:

      • the Memali incident (leading to the killing of PAS leader Ibrahim Libya and his followers),

      • Operation Kenari (that led to arrests of PAS members and the accusation of PAS harbouring militants),

      • the KMM and al-Maunah incidents when PAS was again accused of having links with terrorist groups?
So is this new Hadari version of UMNO now about to cut a deal with the very same PAS that they have been accusing of being militant and radical?

If so, what will this do to the image of the Malaysian government if and when it has this very same 'militant' PAS in its company?

Which brings us to the last point: For more than three decades now the Islamisation race between UMNO and PAS has witnessed UMNO's sustained attack on PAS as a party that is cast as fundamentalist, reactionary, militant and dangerous.

Now as a result of the poor showing of the BN at the March 2008 elections, UMNO is doing another volte-face and courting PAS in the name of Malay racial and communal solidarity.

Bad (PAS) Muslims versus Good (UMNO) Muslims

But throughout this period (1980-2008) it was UMNO that cast ITSELF in the international arena as the 'GOOD' Muslims and PAS as the 'BAD' Muslims.

The current establishment has even gone as far as broadcasting to the world that UMNO's brand of Hadari Islam is the correct, moderate and modern Islam to be emulated, juxtaposed to PAS's Islam which is painted in Taliban-esque colours.

To bring PAS that has been so vilified into the BN coalition would certainly raise eyebrows the world over and give cause for foreign governments and investors to think twice:

      1. Who was lying then, UMNO or PAS?

      2. Was UMNO wrong to cast PAS in a negative light?

      3. Or has UMNO now endorsed PAS's version of Islam that it once decried as being fundamentalist and militant?
Either way, the image of Malaysia and the Malaysian government is at stake at a time when the world is already watching Malaysia closely as a result of the repeat of the sodomy allegations against Anwar.

All of this points to the picture of a weak government that has lost its politcal bearings and compass.

UMNO's courting of PAS (and vice-versa) reminds us that racial considerations come before all else in Malaysia still.

      Weakening Ethno-Nationalist-Centric Leaders in PAS

Despite the attempts to turn PAS into a truly Islamic party that transcends race and communal politics, there remain pockets of ethno-nationalist sympathy in that party.

One can only hope for the sake of Malaysia, and Malaysia's weak but slowly emerging democracy, that the modern progressive voices in PAS will prevail to scuttle this dubious round of backroom negotiations.

Ustaz Nasharudin Mat Isa: The UMNO "MOLE" in PAS Leadership

      Timbalan Presiden, PAS

      Hati saya hancur sehancur-hancurnya.

Di dalam interview beliau dengan Karim Raslan, Timbalan Presiden PAS Ustaz Nasharudin Mat Isa ditanya berkenaan Anwar Ibrahim.

      Beliau menjawab:

“I am not sure of his (Anwar Ibrahim) popularity when compared to 1998. The latest developments – the Saiful event and the statutory declaration by private investigator P. Balasubramaniam – have affected Anwar’s credibility.

Still, his ability to lead is unquestionable. It’s arguable that the Malay community is also starting to believe the accusations against Anwar. His delay in taking an oath to swear on the Quran is also an issue.”

      "Fraksi UMNO" Dalam Kepimpinan PAS

More Rumors On Anwar Saga
      di mana saya berkata:

“UMNO people more than convinced that the police have found traces of Anwar’s sperm in Saiful Bukhari’s “anus”.

They say, the evidence that the police have on Anwar will put this story to rest for ever. And they also believe, with this evidence, the UMNO people in KeAdilan will come back to UMNO in masses.”

Tak payah ceritalah pasal calon Timbalan Perdana Menteri kita, Ustaz Nasharudin Mat Isa .

      - Tuan Guru Haji Hadi Awang

“...Nobody can deny this. There are problems at both state and federal levels. Pakatan must get its house in order and consolidate its position...."

When asked how this can be achieved, he (Ustaz Nasharudin Mat Isa) answers:

“The level of communication among ourselves isn’t up to standard. This is because everyone is busy. We need to increase the regularity and frequency of communication. We are still to a large degree polarised (Malays, Indians and Chinese) and are still finding it difficult to overcome these differences which remain at the core between the different Pakatan members.”
