Perak PAS Commissioner Ahmad Awang revealed that a PAS leader wanted to form a coalition with Umno to rule Perak after the March 8 general election last year.

In his winding-up speech at the 55th PAS muktamar, Ahmad, who did not seek re-election as vice-president, told the delegates that he received a call from the official who is part of the party's national leadership asking him to band with Umno, which he refused.

After beating Husam Musa and Mohd Sabu for the PAS deputy presidency, Nasharudin Mat Isa defended party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang who has been criticised for pushing talks for a unity government. Nasharudin also vowed PAS would NOT close its doors to Umno .

On the unity government proposal, he said that the idea had to be put on hold as the party needs time to explain it to the members. Nasharudin added that PAS should NOT “shut the door” on having a dialogue with Umno. He also said it was a necessity for the betterment of the nation.

Nasharudin obtained 480 votes, while Husam, 281 while the third contender Mohamad Sabu received 261 votes. When pointed out that he obtained less than 50 per cent of the votes, Nasharudin said: “I still won.”

Nasharudin Mat Isa also said Tok Guru Nik Aziz's views do NOT represent the party. (This is) akin to PAS rejecting its soul as the Tok Guru is PAS spiritual leader. “That is the opinion of Tok Guru, but in the organisation we take the party’s stance. Now there isn’t actually any concrete decision made by the party with regards Umno. The issue will be decided by the party,” he said.

PAS spiritual leader Datuk Seri Nik Abdul Aziz last night had reiterated his disapproval of the unity government proposal, isolating the man behind the idea, party president Datuk Seri Hadi Abdul Awang, and his pro-unity talk supporters.

Speaking at a ceramah held in conjunction with the party’s 55th muktamar (general assembly), Nik Aziz said those who speak of co-operation with Umno are apparently oblivious to the rivalry between these two arch-rivals throughout their existence.

There is no need to talk to Umno about all this unity government nonsense, it is rubbish,” he told the 5,000 strong attendees who cheered upon hearing the statement. Those who speak of co-operation with Umno are definitely oblivious to its cruelty and we in Kelantan know this,” he said further.

Nik Aziz’s rejection is an open attack against Hadi who has not denied the possibility of further talks, supposedly on behalf of Pakatan Rakyat, with Umno to propose a unity government which Hadi claims to be the best way forward for Malaysia. Read here for more

Highest-grossing PAS central working committee member, Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin believes that the mooted unity talks with Umno will not take place. According to the ousted Perak menteri besar, the matter was not discussed by the delegates at the muktamar although it was mentioned by party president Abdul Hadi Awang. Read here for more

Husam Musa says there should not be cooperation with Umno is accepted by the party during this year's muktamar.

""As long as they (Umno) are in a position of advantage, we should not be cooperating with them. If we are leading (in terms of seat) then we can negotiate. If we negotiate now, it would be seen as helping Umno which is now in a dire state," Husam emphasised. Read here for more

Husam Musa said it was too late for Nasharuddin Mat Isa to deny any plans for the party to join Umno. "I am part of the top leadership so I know what really happened behind the scene," he said when asked by reporters to comment on Nasharuddin’s statement yesterday that the party did not have any plans to join Umno. Asked if he thinks that Nasharuddin was stretching the truth, Husam said: "The truth will come out later." Read here for more

UPDATE: (7 June 2009)

DAP Leader Lim Guan Eng said PAS leaders owe a thorough explanation to Pakatan Rakyat top leadership on the party's unity talks with Umno. As a coalition partner, PAS should not keep its allies, the DAP and PKR, in the dark over its ambitious plan to form a unity government in collaboration with Umno.

Lim said the PAS leadership had NEVER explained to the Pakatan leadership over its alleged unity talks held last year with Umno.

He refuted claims by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang that Pakatan leaders were receptive to the unity talks when PAS explained it to them.

"Pakatan leadership NEVER discussed the unity talks, neither did PAS inform us about it. We are unaware of the goings-on," he told journalists.

Lim reminded ABDUL HADI to be TRUTHFUL and be a God fearing person. "As a religious man, one will not be answerable only to DAP, but also God," he said.

The issue of unity talks dominated PAS' annual congress over the weekend with many leaders and delegates slamming the party leadership's initiatives to hold talks with arch rivals Umno to form an ambitious unity government at the federal level.

Even the much-revered PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat and ousted Perak menteri besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin openly opposed
such an idea, which if materialised, could weaken the Pakatan coalition

Pesuruhjaya PAS Perak, Ustaz Ahmad Awang enggan mendedahkan nama pengkhianat mandat rakyat yang menghasut beliau supaya merelakan PAS membentuk kerajaan bersama-sama Umno di Perak.

"

Nasharuddin’s Victory: Is it good for UMNO?

Nasharuddin’s Victory is bad for UMNO.

It will stultify the much needed internal changes shouted about. (It gives UMNO) a sudden feeling of false security. This could come in the form of thinking and feeling that the victors in the recently concluded PAS elections are sympathetic to UMNO's agenda.

The prematurely ejaculated enthusiastic responses from UMNO people serve only to betray the true unwillingness to change. How could we expect those with vested interests to sign away their privileges?

The danger of treating Nasharudin's win as welcoming, is to relegate UMNO and PAS as good substitutes.

I do not see any positives to those of us who wish Mat Isa not so well, in his election to the No.2 spot in PAS, and I will not craft a make believe advantage that will accrue to the Pakatan Rakyat, or to those of us who had prayed that he will not be elected, but he has been elected andwe need to asses what are the disadvantage that is likely to flow from this unfortunate development.

The issue at this point is what influence has Mat Isa and Hadi Awang have on the majority of PAS members; and we have to be realistic that they are President and Deputy; so what will counter-balance their negative influence. On the other hand those who truely support the Pakatan Rakyat see a ray of hope in the opposition by PAS spiritual leader Tok Guru and of course the emerging leader in Nizar Jamaluddin, who is the most respected PAS leader and righful Mentri Besar of Perak, and to my mind will be again return to his leadership of the Perak government. We may say this and that man is the President & Deputy, but these men do not hold OFFICE AS THE MB, as Tok Guru and Nizar does; therefore can we not see that their influence (Tok Guru & Nizar)will PREVAIL because of the HERO WORSHIP facto among the Malays and in this sense they will we out weigh the influence the gen. membership ?

It is of no consequence to me that Malay members lead the Pakatan Rakyat because other than Penang, all other states have constitutions that require a Malay to be Mentri Besar. However, if the PAS leaves the Pakatan Rakyat, then let us be realistic to understand that Pakatan Rakyat cannot repeat their performance like that of the 2008 general election. In the present form and the strong performance, Pakatan Rakyat will definitely win the next General Election. What really riles me is that when Pakatan Rakyat is so close to wining government we get a few from PAS who wants to breath SOME LIFE INTO A DYING UMNO; what is the point ? I am amazed that Mat Isa who can support the PAKATAN RAKYAT to win government in their own right (PAS, DAP & PKR), SURRENDER THEIR TOTAL AND ABSOLUTE victory that will very likely come in the wake of the next general election, TO BE BOSSED OVER BY JOINGING UMNO. If PAS joins UMNO what will be the position of the PAS but to be another MCA or MIC or Gerakan ? Makes no sense ! Is it so important to Mat Isaa that the Malays have to be the ketuaan Melayu ?

I don't want to comment on nasarudin, but I have reviewed the presidents statement and the so called press statements and interviews, few times, I cannot seemed to find any of his comment related to the so called PAS-UMNO "kerajaan perpaduan". I wonder where all this surfaced from?
